Quick start
Votion helps you do three things: organize lecture notes, problems, and quick notes into a clear knowledge tree (notes); schedule daily study and review with spaced repetition (study plans); and ask AI to solve a problem and answer follow-up questions when you get stuck. Eligible accounts can also ask the AI Tutor to explain a problem from the beginning on a blackboard.
This chapter takes you through the basics in ten minutes: sign up, find your way around, understand spaces, and choose a path to get started.
Sign up and log in
Register with an email address to start taking notes and scheduling reviews.
- Open the website and click "Sign up" at the top right.
- Fill in "Username", "Email address", and "Password". A red
*after "Invitation code" means a code is required; if it says "Invitation code (optional)", you can leave it blank. - Check the two consent boxes below, then click "Sign up".
- Find the verification code in your email and enter the 6-digit code on the verification page.
- After verification, you are logged in automatically and taken to the public space.
- Usernames: 2–30 characters, using only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. Start with a letter or number; do not end with a hyphen.
- Your username cannot be changed after registration. It appears in your personal space URL, such as
/s/xiaoming/default, so choose one you want to keep. - Passwords: at least 8 characters, including both letters and numbers.
- You can also register in the mobile app. On the login page, use the registration link.
For code expiry, missing emails, and password recovery, see Registration and email verification and Login and password recovery.
Find your way around
Get to know a few fixed locations first. References to the header, left sidebar, and edit mode in later chapters will then be easy to follow.
- ①Browse / Study plan / Account
- ②AI entry point
- ③Space / subject switcher
- ④Outline tree and tools
- ⑤Online, full screen, pin mode, edit, search
- ⑥Avatar menu (Help, Plans, Get the app, Feedback)
Header and avatar menu
- ① The three navigation items on the left are "Browse", "Study plan", and "Account". In a narrow window, only icons appear: from left to right, a book (Browse), a compass (Study plan), and a person (Account).
- "Browse" returns you to the last page you viewed. The first time, it opens the public space.
- ② The blue diamond in the middle of the header is the "AI" entry point for AI chat and the AI Tutor. See AI entry point.
- ⑤ The tools on the right appear only on content pages (the offline toggle also appears on study plan pages). From left to right: the offline toggle (labelled "Online"), full-screen reading, pin mode, edit mode (a pencil, shown only if you can edit this space), and search. Hover over an icon to see its purpose, such as "Enter edit mode (i)" or "Search (⌘K)".
- ⑥ At the far right is the avatar menu, with "Plans", "Get the app", "Help", "Feedback", and "Log out". To return here after logging in, choose "Help".
When you are logged out, the right side of the header shows "Plans", "Help", "Get the app", "Log in", and "Sign up". The first three work without logging in.
Content page layout
- ③ At the top of the left sidebar is the space / subject switcher. Its button shows the current space and subject ("All" if no subject is selected). Select spaces shared with you here too; see Switch spaces and subjects.
- ④ Below the switcher are "Outline" and several tools (refresh, export, expand all, and outline / mind map switching), followed by the space's outline tree. Click a chapter in the tree to show its content on the right.
- The main area on the right starts with the chapter title, a "Discuss with AI" button, and a favorite star. The chapter's blocks appear below, one after another.
- Before you select a chapter, the main area says only "Select a chapter on the left".
Three kinds of space
A space is a large container for content: a course, a book, or a study group's materials can each have their own space. Votion has three kinds:
| Space | URL | Who can view and edit |
|---|---|---|
| Public space (called "Public Library" in the switcher) | /s/public | All logged-in users can view it; admins maintain its content |
| Personal space, such as xiaoming's personal space | /s/用户名/default | Created at registration; you own it. Nobody else can see it unless you share it |
| Group space | /s/群组 ID/空间标识 | Belongs to a group; members view or edit according to their roles |
- Every space requires login, including the public space.
- If you open a space URL you cannot access, such as someone else's personal space, you see only "Can't find this space". Its name and outline are hidden. A nonexistent space shows the same page. To access someone else's space, ask them to grant access to a group you belong to; see Share a space with a group.
- For chapters and block types within a space, see Spaces, nodes, and blocks.
- To use a space with classmates, see Collaboration and sharing.
Three ways to get started
You do not need to learn every feature at once. Choose the path most useful to you now.
Organize materials into notes
An outline shows the structure of a course. Blocks can contain formulas, images, and interactive diagrams, so you do not have to hunt through files when reviewing.
- Click "Browse", choose your personal space in the switcher at the top of the left sidebar (for username xiaoming, choose xiaoming's personal space), then click "OK".
- Press
ior click the pencil in the header to enter edit mode. - Click "Add chapter" below the outline, enter a chapter name, then click "Add".
- Open the chapter. While empty, it has an "Add content" button in the main area. Once it has content, hover between two blocks to reveal "Insert". Choose a type and start writing.
- Already have lecture notes? In edit mode, hover over the blue "+" at the bottom right and click "Smart Import". AI recognizes and organizes the material into blocks in this chapter (available Thought Points required).
Next: Notes: spaces, outlines, and mind maps, Notes: editing and interactive demos, and Smart Import.
Schedule your reviews
What you learn fades over time. Study plans use spaced repetition to choose today's new material and reviews. Just open your plan each day and begin. This is free.
- Click "Study plan" in the header, then "New plan".
- Enter a plan name, choose "Open-ended study", choose a space (if you have no notes yet, start with existing content in "Public Library"), then click "Next: choose content".
- Check the chapters you want to master and click "Create plan".
- Return to "Study plan" each day and click "Start studying" on the plan card. When reviews are due, the button becomes "Review (N)".
- After each item, honestly choose "Forgot", "Fuzzy", or "Remembered". The system uses your answer to schedule its next appearance.
Next: Study plans: creating and viewing and Study plans: study, review, and quizzes.
Use AI to solve, discuss, and learn
When you are stuck on a problem, ask AI to write out the reasoning step by step and follow up on anything unclear. AI features require available Thought Points; membership is not required.
- Click the "Discuss with AI" speech bubble on the right of a problem's title bar. The problem statement and existing solutions are included automatically; just ask about the step you did not understand.
- No solution yet? Press
ito enter edit mode, click the problem title to expand it, then click "Solve with AI" at the bottom ("Draft a proof with AI" for academic blocks such as theorems and lemmas). Click the same button again in the dialog. The AI solution is saved to the problem. - For a general question, click "AI" in the middle of the header and choose "AI chat".
- To hear a full explanation, use the AI Tutor, still labelled beta, with access controlled by the site settings. Eligible accounts see a graduation cap labelled "Have the AI Tutor explain this" in the problem title bar, and can also open "AI Tutor" from "AI". Other accounts see "Not open yet" there.
Next: AI: solving and discussing problems and AI Tutor.
Free use and membership
Taking notes, organizing materials, studying, and reviewing online are free, subject to capacity and permissions.
- Membership provides higher capacity, all exports, offline features, and 1,000 granted points each membership month.
- AI chat, Smart Import, solving, and the AI Tutor consume Thought Points based on actual usage. Non-members can buy points separately. The AI Tutor also requires access under the site settings.
- All exports, including personal-data ZIPs and AI lessons, require membership; points alone do not unlock them. Installing the PWA and using Votion online are free.
See Free and member comparison for prices and capacity, and How to subscribe for top-ups and subscriptions.
Notes: spaces, outlines, and mind maps
Scattered lecture notes, mistakes, and quick classroom notes soon become hard to find. In Votion, they form a clear knowledge tree: build levels in the outline on the left, then switch to a mind map for the whole picture. Both views use the same content. Edit either and both update; there is only one structure to maintain.
This chapter covers structure, finding content, favorites, and exports. For formulas, figures, and interactive demos within blocks, see Notes: editing and interactive demos. To turn a whole handout into notes, see Notes: Smart Import.
Spaces, nodes, and blocks
Three terms explain the structure: content belongs to a space, a space contains a tree of nodes, and each node holds an ordered set of blocks.
| Level | What it is | Analogy |
|---|---|---|
| Space | All materials for a course, book, or study group | A book |
| Node | One outline entry, which can contain child nodes | Chapters and subchapters |
| Block | One piece of content on a node's page | An explanation, problem, or annotation |
- The outline calls nodes chapters ("Add chapter", "Add child chapter"); the mind map calls them nodes ("Add child node"). They are the same thing.
- Nodes can nest up to 50 levels, more than enough for chapters and subchapters.
- Spaces can be public, personal, or group-owned; see Three kinds of space.
Block types are below. Add the first four through "Insert" in edit mode (see Insert blocks):
- "Text": explanations with Markdown, formulas, images, drawings, and interactive diagrams.
- "Academic block": Problem, Theorem, Corollary, Lemma, Proposition, Property, Conjecture, Definition, Axiom, Remark, and Example. They support sources and tags; problems and examples also support difficulty. Expand them for solutions, proofs, or explanations.
- "Notes": your annotations, visible only to you by default (see Private notes).
- "Interactive": demos such as 3D models or embedded web pages; imported material may also contain attachments in this form.
- Favorite entries: found only in favorites folders, linking back to original nodes or blocks (see Favorites).
Switch spaces and subjects
Switch among spaces you can access and filter the outline to the subject you want to review.
- Click the button at the top left showing the space / subject names. Without a selected subject, it shows "All" after the slash.
- Choose a "Space", then a "Subject" or "All".
- Click "OK". It is enabled only if your choices differ from the current ones.
- The list includes every accessible space: the public space ("Public Library"), your personal space, your groups' spaces, and spaces granted to your groups by others. Shared spaces appear here; there is no separate shared-with-me page.
- Selecting a subject limits the outline to its chapters.
- "Create space" at the bottom creates a new space (hidden offline); see Create and delete spaces. For spaces where you are an admin or owner, a "Space settings" gear appears on the right of the row (also hidden offline). Use it to rename or grant group access; see Share a space with a group.
Outline tree
The outline is the space's table of contents: expand levels, click to open, and build or adjust your knowledge structure.
Browse and focus
- Open: click a chapter name to show its content on the right. The outline expands to its location automatically.
- Expand or collapse: click the small arrow beside the chapter. Each space's expanded state is remembered in this browser on this computer.
- Four small buttons sit to the right of "Outline", left to right:
- Focus: double-click a chapter name to show only that chapter and its children on the left. The heading becomes "Parent node" with a left arrow; click to move up one level at a time.
Create, rename, move, and delete
In edit mode, build the structure directly in the outline: add chapters, rename, drag to reorder, or move an entire chapter to another space.
You need Editor access or higher (see Roles and permissions) and edit mode enabled with i or the header pencil (see Edit mode). Hover over a chapter to reveal four icons: ① "Edit", ② "Move to...", ③ "Add child chapter", and ④ "Delete". ⑤ "Add chapter" also appears at the bottom of the outline.
- ①Edit name or subject
- ②Move to... (including another space)
- ③Add child chapter
- ④Delete
- ⑤Add chapter at the current level
Create a chapter
- Use "Add child chapter" (③) to add beneath a chapter, or "Add chapter" (⑤) at the bottom for a top-level chapter. When focused on one chapter, ⑤ adds a sibling of that chapter.
- In "Add chapter", enter "Chapter name:" (1 to 200 characters), then choose "Subject". It defaults to the parent's subject. At the top level, or if the parent has none, it defaults to the switcher's subject; if the switcher says "All", it uses "No subject".
- Click "Add" and wait for "Added".
Rename or change subject
- Click "Edit" (①) and change the name or subject in "Edit chapter".
- Click "Save".
- A subject change opens "Change subject?"; click "Change". All child chapters change too. Under a subject filter, the chapter may disappear from the view; switch to "All" or the new subject to see it.
Drag to reposition
Drag one chapter over another and release:
- In the top quarter of the target row: place it before the target.
- In the bottom quarter: place it after the target.
- In the middle, with a green border: move it inside as a child chapter.
Move elsewhere or to another space
- Click "Move to..." (②) to open "Move node to".
- Select a target space. Only spaces you can edit appear; the present one is marked "Current".
- Choose a destination chapter, or "Root" for the top level.
- Click "Move here". The chapter moves with its descendants and content.
Delete
- Click "Delete" (④).
- With no child chapters, confirm "Delete this chapter and all its child chapters?" by clicking "Delete".
- With children, choose "Delete this chapter and all its child chapters" or "Delete only the child chapters" (keeping this chapter and its own content).
- If the range contains your AI discussions, choose "Keep discussions" to retain them without their chapter association, or choose to also delete the N discussions permanently. Other people's discussions are always kept.
- Deletion requires Admin access or higher, except Editors can delete chapters they created. Trying to delete someone else's chapter gives a permission error.
- "My favorites" and "Inbox" are system chapters and cannot be renamed, moved, or deleted. Their delete action becomes "Clear child chapters", which clears only content beneath them.
- Web offline mode is view-only. You cannot create, rename, move, or delete chapters; see What works offline.
Mind map
View the same outline as a mind map to see the whole space at a glance. Follow its branches before reviewing to revisit the knowledge structure. In edit mode, add nodes, rename them, and adjust hierarchy directly on the map.
The mind map is the outline itself, not a separate drawing. Chapters added in the outline appear on the map, and names edited on the map change in the outline.
- ①Switch to content
- ②Mind map path
- ③Actions menu
- ④The root is the space name
Open and switch back
- Click "Switch to mind map", the last button beside "Outline". The map fills the content area and temporarily hides the left outline.
- Click "Switch to content" at the top left (①) to return.
- Your outline / mind map choice for each space is remembered in this browser on this computer.
- The map opens from the chapter you were viewing. "Mind map path" at the top (②) lists its ancestors; click any level to jump there, or the space name at the beginning for the whole space. From the space home page, the central root is the space name (④).
Browse
- Click a node to select it. Switching back to content opens that chapter.
- Double-click a node to make it the root and focus on that branch.
- Right-click a node for the same menu as "Actions" (③).
- Pan and zoom: scroll to move vertically, Shift+scroll horizontally, and Ctrl+scroll (⌘ on Mac) to zoom. If the map gets lost, choose "Fit to canvas" under "Actions".
- "Expand branch" and "Collapse branch" affect every level beneath the selected node.
Edit on the map
You need edit access, edit mode, and an online connection. Otherwise the top right shows "Read-only" or "Offline browsing". Select a node first, then use "Actions" or shortcuts:
| Action | Shortcut | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Add child node | Tab | Add a node beneath the selected one |
| Add sibling | Enter | Add a sibling immediately after the selected node |
| Rename | F2 | Rename directly on the map |
| Move up a level | — | Move to the parent's level, immediately after the former parent |
| Move to… | — | Move elsewhere within this space |
| Delete node | Delete | Delete the node and all descendants |
Backspace also deletes nodes; on a Mac keyboard, use delete. While renaming, it deletes text normally, not the node. F2 on Mac usually requires fn.
Every edit shows "Saving…" at the bottom right, then "Saved".
Two layouts
At the bottom of "Actions", choose a layout (also requires edit mode):
- "Automatic layout" (default): dragging a node onto another changes hierarchy and order, like dragging in the outline.
- "Free layout": dragging changes only map positions, not hierarchy. Positions are stored in this browser on this computer and do not appear on other computers or browsers.
Limits
- "Move to…" in the map moves only within the current space. Use "Move to..." in the outline for another space.
- The deletion confirmation is "Delete permanently". Content and attachments are removed irreversibly; AI discussions remain but lose their chapter association.
- A branch containing a system node, such as "My favorites", cannot be deleted.
Reading page
Open a chapter to see all its content on the right. Small buttons on the title bar and blocks let you ask AI or add favorites as you read.
- Title bar: chapter title, "Discuss with AI" for the whole page (see Discuss a block or whole page), and a star for favoriting the whole chapter (see Favorites). View-only spaces also show "Report illegal or harmful content" (see Feedback and reports).
- Blocks: hover over text for "Discuss this with AI" and a favorite star at the top right, plus "Edit" and "Delete" in edit mode. Problems, notes, and interactive blocks have their stars in their own title bars.
- Before selecting a chapter, the right side says "Select a chapter on the left". Empty chapters say "No content yet".
For focused reading:
- Full screen: click "Full-screen reading (Esc to exit)" in the header. The header and outline disappear, leaving content and a small floating toolbar. Press Esc to exit.
- Pin mode: click "Turn on pin mode (keeps the problem statement in view while scrolling)". A long problem's title and statement stay pinned above its solution so you need not scroll back to compare.
Search
Remember a word but not its chapter? Search the current space's titles and content, then open a result to highlight each match.
- ①At least 2 characters
- ②Node: title match
- ③Content: body match and excerpt
- ④Highlighted matching word
- Click "Search (⌘K)" in the header, or press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows).
- Enter at least 2 characters in "Search nodes and content..." (①). Search starts automatically after you pause.
- Results labelled "Node" match chapter titles (②). "Content" results match the body and include an excerpt (③), with the matching word in yellow (④).
- Click a result to open the chapter. A yellow bar at the top shows the highlighted keyword and match position (1/n). Enter or F3 moves to the next match, Shift+Enter to the previous. Click "Clear highlight" or press Esc when done.
- Search covers only the current space; switch spaces first to search elsewhere.
- A subject filter on the outline does not limit search; it still covers the whole space.
- At most 20 results appear, one per chapter, with title matches first.
- Problem statements and solutions are searchable; other people's private notes are not.
- Search is unavailable offline.
- No matches shows "No results.".
Favorites
Save useful explanations and good problems into your own themed favorites folders, optionally with a note. Revisit them before an exam or use them in a study plan.
- ①Default favorites folder
- ②New favorites folder
- ③Notes (optional)
- ④Favorite
Favorite a block or chapter
- For a block, hover and click the "Favorite" star. For a whole chapter, use the star beside the page title. Problems, notes, and interactive blocks have stars in their own title bars.
- In "Add to favorites", choose a "Favorites folder". The one marked "Default" is initially selected (①). To organize by topic, click "New" (②), enter "Favorites folder name", then "Create".
- Optionally explain why you saved it in "Notes (optional)" (③).
- Click "Favorite" (④). The star becomes solid yellow.
- The first time you open this dialog, the system creates "My favorites" in your personal space with "Default favorites" beneath it.
- Clicking a filled star removes the favorite immediately, without asking again.
Find favorites
- Switch to your personal space.
- Expand "My favorites" in the outline and open a folder.
- Each favorite is a card with a title, summary, and "Node" or "Block" badge. Block favorites also show their source chapter. "View the original" returns to the source; clicking a block card expands its full content.
- Favorites are ordered by when you added them, oldest first. Any note you wrote follows its favorite.
- Favorites folders are ordinary chapters under "My favorites". Rename, reorder, or delete them (deleting their favorites too). "Add child chapter" on "My favorites" also creates a folder. "My favorites" itself cannot be renamed, moved, or deleted.
- A card's "Remove from favorites" button appears only in edit mode and asks for confirmation.
- Deleted sources show "The original content was deleted"; revoked access shows "You don't have access to this content".
- Favorites live in your personal space, not the original space. Others cannot see them unless you share your personal space with a group.
- Web offline mode disables adding and removing favorites; stars cannot be clicked, but downloaded favorites remain readable. See What works offline.
- The mobile app can view existing favorites but cannot add any.
- Favorites count toward your block allowance; see Capacity limits.
Export PDF / Word / Markdown
Export selected chapters to print before an exam, share with classmates, or keep as a backup.
- ①Selected chapters
- ②Choose from the whole space
- ③Format
- ④Hide node titles
- Click "Export" (the download icon) beside "Outline" to open "Export content".
- By default, only chapters currently visible in the outline appear. If focused on a chapter, only that chapter appears. Click "Choose from the whole space" (②) for everything, or "Show the current view only" to switch back.
- Check chapters to export (①), or use "Select all". Selecting a chapter includes all its descendants.
- Under "Format:" (③), choose PDF, Markdown, or Word. For PDF, "Hide node titles" (④) omits chapter headings from the document.
- Click "Export" and wait. The browser downloads the file automatically, named after the first selected chapter.
Choose a format:
| Format | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Printing and sharing for reading | Most complete layout; interactive diagrams and drawings become static images | |
| Word | Further editing | Formulas become editable Word equations; interactive diagrams and drawings are rendered as images |
| Markdown | Plain-text backup and other note apps | Excludes interactive diagrams and drawings; external images are removed, and site-hosted images remain links to Votion that may not work elsewhere |
- All export formats require membership. Exporting existing content does not consume Thought Points; points alone do not unlock export.
- Only content you can view is exported; other people's private notes are excluded.
- An account can run only one export at a time. If one is running, a message asks you to wait for it to finish.
- PDF exports use a site-wide queue. Progress shows how many jobs are ahead; a full queue asks you to retry later. Word exports do not queue and ask you to retry if the server is busy.
- PDF and Word exports have a per-export size limit based on equivalent text length, including images and figures. If exceeded, a message asks you to export chapters in separate parts.
- Export is unavailable offline.
Capacity limits
Outline, mind map, search, and favorites are free; export requires membership. Capacity limits depend on membership status.
- Four measures: spaces, nodes (chapters), blocks, and total text and structured content (including saved AI chats and lesson text). See Free and member comparison for defaults; admins can adjust them.
- Content counts against its creator. Chapters and blocks you create in a classmate's or group's space count against you; other people's contributions in your space count against them.
- Your automatically created personal space counts as 1 space.
- Each favorite counts as 1 block, plus 2 more if you attach a note.
- Deleting content reduces the corresponding usage. If it remains over the limit, you still cannot add more of that content. You can add content only once usage is below the limit with room available; deleting some content does not create an allowance to add the same amount again.
- Images and attachments have a separate storage limit; see Storage and content limits.
Exceeding a limit opens "Content limit reached", identifying the category and limit and warning that the change was not saved. Delete unnecessary content or activate membership. Check current usage under "Membership › Content usage" (see Membership status and usage).
Keyboard shortcuts
A few shortcuts save many clicks.
| Where | Key | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Content page, outside an input | i | Enter edit mode (requires edit access) |
| Content page | Esc | Exit full screen; outside an input, also save active block edits and exit edit mode, and clear search highlights |
| Content page | ⌘K / Ctrl+K | Open or close search |
| Search highlights, outside an input | Enter or F3 / Shift+Enter | Next / previous match |
| Outline | Double-click chapter | Focus on this chapter |
| Mind map | Double-click node / right-click | Make it the root / open "Actions" |
| Mind map | Scroll / Shift+scroll / Ctrl (⌘ on Mac)+scroll | Pan vertically / horizontally / zoom |
| Mind map in edit mode, after clicking the map | Tab / Enter / F2 / Delete or Backspace (delete on Mac) | Add child / add sibling / rename / delete node |
Inside inputs and editors, i, Esc, and Enter retain their normal editing behavior; they do not toggle edit mode or jump between highlights. With a dialog open, Esc acts only on the dialog.
Notes: editing and interactive diagrams
A page in Votion can hold more than text. Formulas, tables, sketches, draggable graphs, and rotating 3D models can all live in blocks. For a statement such as “greater mass means less acceleration,” add a graph: moving a slider and watching its slope decrease can be easier to remember than reading the conclusion ten times.
This chapter covers editing, inserting content, and saving. For Space, Node, and Block, see Spaces, nodes, and blocks; to turn entire handouts or photos into notes, see Notes: Smart Import.
Edit mode
Insert, edit, and delete buttons appear only in edit mode. The normal reading view stays clean and helps prevent accidental changes.
- Open a node you can edit.
- Click the pencil at the right of the top bar (tooltip: "Enter edit mode (i)"), or press
i. - The pencil turns amber ① and its tooltip becomes "Exit edit mode (Esc)". Click it again or press
Escto leave edit mode.
- ①Edit mode enabled (amber)
- ②Text
- ③Academic block
- ④Interactive (3D models and more)
- ⑤Smart Import: AI recognition (membership)
- ⑥Smart Import / Reorder blocks
Edit mode adds:
- "Insert" buttons between blocks, opening menu ②–⑤; see Insert blocks.
- "Edit" and "Delete" at the upper right when you hover over a block.
- A blue floating "+" button ⑥ at the bottom right. Hover to reveal "Smart Import" and "Reorder blocks".
- Buttons such as "Solve with AI" inside expanded academic blocks; see Academic blocks.
- Create, rename, move, and delete controls in the left outline; see Create, rename, move, and delete.
This browser remembers edit mode across reloads and node changes. While the cursor is in an input or editor, i and Esc do not toggle it, so you can type normally. With a dialog such as the drawing board open, Esc does not leave edit mode either. Click outside the editor first to use Esc to leave.
When you leave edit mode, open block editors save before closing. If saving fails, for example because the network is down, "Some changes weren't saved" keeps edit mode open. Choose "Stay in edit mode" to retain your text and try leaving again when the connection returns. If saving remains impossible because the block was deleted or your editing permission was removed, choose "Discard changes and exit"; see Saving, undo, and simultaneous editing.
Insert blocks
A page is a sequence of blocks. Insert explanations, problems, personal notes, and 3D models between any two blocks.
- Enter edit mode.
- Find the insertion point:
- Hover between blocks to reveal "Insert".
- At the top of the page, use "Insert at top".
- An empty node shows "No content yet" and a large "Add content" button.
- Click to open "Choose a content type" (②–⑤ above), then choose:
| Menu item | Description | What it inserts |
|---|---|---|
| "Text" ② | "Add Markdown text" | A text block with its editor open; see Block editor |
| "Academic block" ③ | "Problems, theorems, lemmas, definitions and more" | An empty problem block; see Academic blocks |
| "Notes" | "Add personal notes" | A yellow note visible only to you; see Private notes |
| "Interactive" ④ | "Add an interactive demo" | A 3D model or external page; see Interactive demos |
| "Smart Import" ⑤ | "Let AI recognize and import content" | Upload an image or PDF for AI to turn into problems, theorems, or notes (available Thought Points required); see Import a problem or some content |
- The new block appears where you clicked.
- Inserting requires editing permission in the space. New blocks count toward your content limits.
- Some blocks have a faint "✦ AI" at the lower right. Its tooltip explains that AI created the content through an API token and people may have edited it since. See Advanced: CLI and Agent access.
Block editor
Write source on the left and see the result on the right, including formula errors. The editor saves automatically after you stop typing for two seconds.
- In edit mode, hover over a text block and click "Edit" (the pencil) at its upper right. For an empty block, click "Click to start typing...".
- The default is "Split": Markdown source on the left ① and live preview on the right ②. Moving the cursor scrolls the preview to approximately the corresponding position.
- The floating bottom bar ④ offers "Edit" for source only, "Split" for both, and "Preview" for the result only.
- Click the green "Save" ⑤ (tooltip: "Save and finish") when done. The editor closes after saving. If saving fails, an error appears and the editor keeps your content so you can retry shortly.
- ①Markdown source
- ②Live preview
- ③Images, drawings, import
- ④Edit / Split / Preview
- ⑤Save
A small toolbar ③ runs along the bottom of the source:
- In Split, it shows "Image", "Draw", and "Import". In Edit, these become "Insert image", "Draw", and "Smart Import", with "Supports Markdown & LaTeX ($...$)" beside them.
- "Image" uploads an image; see Images and layout. "Draw" opens the drawing board; see Sketches. "Import" asks AI to recognize an image or PDF as Markdown and insert it at the cursor (available Thought Points required); see Import a problem or some content.
- "Saving..." and "Saved" briefly appear at the right as autosave runs 2 seconds after typing stops. On failure, "Save failed" stays red; hover for the reason and click "Retry", or type again to trigger another save. Your content stays in the editor.
You can also work with figures directly in the preview:
- Hover over an image, drawing, or graph for its delete button ("Delete image", "Delete drawing", or "Delete figure").
- In "Split", click a drawing to reopen the drawing board or a graph to open "Edit JSXGraph figure".
- In "Preview", you can edit and delete graphs and delete images, but cannot reopen drawings.
Currently unsupported:
- Pasting or dropping images; use "Image" to choose a file.
- Formatting buttons for bold, headings, and similar styles; write Markdown symbols instead (next section).
- Source syntax highlighting.

Blocks use Markdown for headings, lists, and tables, and LaTeX for textbook-style formulas.
- ①Display formula
- ②Right-floating image and caption (|fr)
- ③Red text
- ④Table
- ⑤Blockquote
Supported syntax:
- Headings: start a line with
#through######; more hashes mean a smaller heading. - Bold
**文字**and italic*文字*. Extra spaces inside the stars (** 文字 **) still render as bold. - Ordered and unordered lists (including nested lists), blockquotes
>(⑤), dividers---, and inline code. - Tables (④), strikethrough
~~文字~~, and task lists- [ ]. - Links
[文字](https://…), opening in a new window.
Formulas:
- LaTeX is a standard way to type formulas:
x^2is x squared,\dfrac{a}{b}a fraction,\sqrt{2}the square root of 2, and\omegaand\thetaGreek letters. Ask AI chat for source you can copy if you do not remember the syntax (available Thought Points required). - Put inline formulas between
$signs and display formulas between$$pairs. Display formulas occupy a centered row (①) and scroll horizontally when too wide. \(…\)and\[…\]also work, so copied LaTeX can stay as it is.- Copying rendered text containing formulas produces source with
$…$(or$$…$$for display formulas), ready to paste into the editor.
物体的**加速度**与所受合力成正比,与质量成反比:
$$\vec F_{\text{合}} = m\vec a$$
- 合力为零时,$a = 0$,物体静止或匀速直线运动
- 合力不变时,物体做匀变速运动Rendering…
Tables, red text, and blockquotes:
| 物理量 | 符号 | 单位 |
|---|---|---|
| 角速度 | $\omega$ | rad/s |
| 周期 | $T=\dfrac{2\pi}{\omega}$ | s |
<span style="color:red">注意:向心力是效果力,不要在受力分析里重复画出。</span>
> 小结:先找圆心,再找半径。Rendering…
- Red text has one supported form:
<span style="color:red">要标红的文字</span>(③). Other colors, font sizes, and backgrounds have no effect. - External links must start with
https://; externalhttp://links do not work.
Code blocks behave differently according to their language:
| Code block language | Result |
|---|---|
jc | A draggable graph; see Interactive graphs |
jcs | A static graph that cannot be dragged |
excalidraw | A sketch, usually generated by "Draw"; see Sketches |
Others, such as python | Plain source on a gray background, without syntax highlighting |
- The first three accept a layout suffix such as
jc|fr; see the next section. - The only supported
:::syntax in blocks is:::subfigures, also covered next.
Images and layout
Place diagrams or experiment photos beside explanations, with formula captions underneath. A suffix at the end of the caption controls wrapping and left, center, or right alignment.
Upload an image:
- Open the block editor and place the cursor where the image belongs.
- Click "Image" in Split or "Insert image" in Edit, then choose a file.
- "Image uploaded" appears and
is inserted at the cursor.
- The limit is 5 MB per image. Larger files produce a message showing their size and the 5 MB limit.
- PNG, JPG, WebP, and GIF are supported. HEIC, SVG, and BMP may be selectable but are rejected on upload.
- Images use your storage allowance; see Storage and content limits. Uploading the same image again stores only one copy and does not use extra space.
- You cannot edit blocks or insert images while the website is offline.
Display rules:
- Images fit within 400×300 while retaining their proportions.
- Text in brackets is the caption, shown directly below. A newly uploaded image uses its filename; replace it with a useful description.
To position an image, append | and a layout marker to its caption:
- No marker: centered when the image is alone with blank lines before and after; in the normal text flow when it shares a block of text without blank lines.
|l,|c,|r: a separate row aligned left, center, or right.|fl: float left, with following text wrapping on the right.|fr: float right, with following text wrapping on the left (② in the previous screenshot).

图注末尾加上 `|fr`,图就浮到右边,下面的文字从左侧绕过去。图注里的公式用 `\$` 包起来。Rendering…
- Floated figures use at most half the width and shrink with narrow layouts. Following text wraps until it passes the bottom of the figure. A heading ends the wrap and starts a new row.
- These markers also work after a code block language, such as
jc|frorexcalidraw|c. Without a marker, those figures are centered.
Multiple images:
- Put images on consecutive lines without blank lines or intervening text to arrange them in a centered row.
- Use a subfigure group for a shared title. Individual captions remain, and the group title appears underneath (plain text only, no formulas):
:::subfigures[图 3 单摆与圆锥摆]

:::
- The mobile app does not show captions or apply layout markers: images align left without wrapping. The two
:::delimiter lines of subfigure groups appear as literal text.
Sketches (Excalidraw)
For a force diagram, flowchart, or sketch, click "Draw" in the editor. The drawing board also supports formulas.
- Place the cursor in the block editor and click "Draw" to open "Drawing board".
- Use the top tools for rectangles, arrows, lines, and text.
- For a formula, click "∑ LaTeX" at the upper right. Enter it in "Insert LaTeX formula", or use a "Quick insert" example. Check "Preview", then click "Insert formula". Double-click an existing formula to edit it.
- Click "Insert image" at the lower right when finished.
- Drawings are stored as
excalidrawcode blocks and displayed as images. Click one in the Split preview to reopen it with its existing content. - Raster images such as photos cannot be saved in the board. Saving reports the unsupported image format, such as image/png, and asks you to remove it. Use Images for photos.
- A drawing's data must not exceed 1 MB; pasted SVG must not exceed 50 KB.
Interactive graphs (JSXGraph)
Graphs and geometric figures can be written directly in blocks. Readers can drag points and sliders to explore how changing one quantity affects another.
- ①Slider m (draggable)
- ②a–F graph (slope = 1/m)
- ③Draggable in reading mode (jc figure)
In this example, dragging slider m ① changes the slope 1/m of the a–F graph ②. You can drag in reading mode ③. It changes only your current view, not the saved notes.
Write a code block with one of these languages:
jc: interactive points and sliders.jcs: everything fixed in place, useful for static geometry diagrams.
Set size and coordinate bounds in comments at the beginning:
// @size 宽x高: pixel dimensions, default 300×300.// @bbox xmin, ymax, xmax, ymin: coordinate bounds, default-10,10,10,-10.// @axis false: hide axes (shown by default).
The language is JSXGraph's JessieCode. Labels render as formulas: use notation such as 'N_1' and '\\theta', not Chinese text.
拖动滑块 $m$,看 $a$–$F$ 图线的斜率 $\dfrac1m$ 怎样变化:
```jc
// @size 300x200
// @bbox -1,7,11,-1
ms = slider([3.5,0.6],[7,0.6],[0.5,1,3]) << name:'m', snapWidth:0.1 >>;
fl = functiongraph(map(x) -> x / V(ms), 0, 10) << strokeColor:'#2563eb', strokeWidth:2, name:'aF', withLabel:false >>;
```Rendering…
Edit an existing graph:
- Open its block editor in Split.
- Click the graph in the right preview to open "Edit JSXGraph figure", with "JessieCode code" on the left and "Live preview" on the right.
- Click "Save" when done. The update confirmation means the new code was written back to the editor; you still need to click the bottom "Save".
- There is no button to create a new graph. Write a code block, or use toolbar "Import" to have AI recognize an image with the JessieCode image format; see Import a problem or some content.
- When editing code directly in Split, the graph refreshes about 2 seconds after you stop typing.
- Invalid code produces an error on a red background inside the graph frame.
Interactive demos (including 3D models)
Some ideas need more than a flat diagram. A conical pendulum, for example, circles horizontally while its string sweeps a cone. Interactive demos put draggable, rotating 3D models directly into notes.
- ①Type, name, dimensions
- ②Drag to rotate the 3D model
An interactive demo is a separate block, not text markup. To insert one:
- Enter edit mode and choose "Insert" → "Interactive" at the desired position.
- In "Add interactive content", choose:
- "Choose a widget": opens "Choose an interactive component", with "Search widgets...". Click a component to preview it, fill in "Parameters" if available, and click "Choose this component".
- "External embed": enter a page address in "iframe URL", then click "Add external embed".
When reading:
- The collapsed row shows a purple "Interactive demo" badge, its name and dimensions ①, with a thumbnail below.
- Click the row to expand and run the model ②. Drag or rotate with the mouse; click again to collapse.
In edit mode, the right side also has "Configure parameters" (for values such as length and angle), "Replace component", and "Delete".
- Widgets are made by system administrators. You can choose existing ones and change parameters, but cannot upload new ones. Request a model through Feedback.
- External sites must allow embedding. Expanded embeds offer "Open in new window" at the upper right.
- Academic block editors also have an "Interactive" tab for adding a demo to a problem.
- Some blocks of this kind are labeled "Attachment" and contain an image or PDF with "Download attachment".
Academic blocks: problems, theorems, and solutions
Academic blocks hold content with a statement and an answer. The statement stays visible while the solution is collapsed, so you can think before checking. Saved solutions also become answers in study plans.
- ①Type and status
- ②Difficulty, source, tags
- ③Solution (AI-generated)
- ④Discuss with AI
- ⑤Have the AI Tutor explain this (beta)
There are 11 types, selected with "Type:" in the editor:
| Type | Main content | Expanded content | Difficulty stars | AI button |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Problem | Problem statement | Solution | Yes | "Solve with AI" |
| Example | Problem | Solution | Yes | "Solve with AI" |
| Theorem, Corollary, Lemma, Proposition, Property, Conjecture | Statement | Proof | No | "Draft a proof with AI" |
| Definition | Definition | Explanation | No | "Explain with AI" |
| Axiom | Axiom | Explanation | No | "Explain with AI" |
| Remark | Content | Details | No | "Expand with AI" |
Reading an academic block:
- The title bar starts with type and status ①: "Solved" means a solution exists; "Unsolved" means none exists yet. Then come title, difficulty (1–5 stars, for problems and examples only), source, and tags ②.
- The problem or theorem statement is always visible.
- Single-click the title bar to expand or collapse the solution, notes, and interactive demo. AI solutions carry an "AI-generated, for reference only" notice ③ and a report button; see AI reliability and reporting.
- "Double-click" to open the editor in edit mode, or a read-only dialog otherwise.
- At the right, "Discuss with AI" ④ works without edit mode (available Thought Points required); see Discuss a problem. The graduation-cap "Have the AI Tutor explain this" button ⑤ is visible only to accounts eligible for the AI Tutor; see Start from a problem. There is also a favorite star. Edit mode adds "Edit problem" and "Delete problem", with labels changing by type, such as "Edit theorem".
Create an academic block:
- In edit mode, choose "Insert" → "Academic block". An empty "Problem", marked "Unsolved", appears with no statement yet.
- Click the "Edit problem" pencil on the right of its title bar.
- Select "Type:" and enter an optional title, "Difficulty:", "Source", and "Tags (comma-separated)".
- Fill in the left tabs: "Problem statement", "Solution", "Notes", and "Interactive". Names follow the type, such as "Statement" and "Proof" for a theorem.
- Click "Save" at the top.
- The editor also offers "Recognize with AI" (available Thought Points required): upload a problem image or PDF to fill the fields; see Import a problem or some content.
- Expand a block without a solution in edit mode to use "Solve with AI" (or "Draft a proof with AI", "Explain with AI", or "Expand with AI", depending on type). See Solve with AI (available Thought Points required).
- Separate tags with the English comma
,. A Chinese comma “,” keeps the words together as one tag.
- "Show answer" in a study plan displays this solution; see Study page.
- Academic blocks can also be selected for a Random quiz.
Private notes
Add a personal observation or reminder beside your reading. Private notes are yellow notes only you can see.
- In edit mode, choose "Insert" → "Notes". A yellow note appears labeled "Notes" and "My notes".
- Click "Edit" on its right and write in "Edit notes". It autosaves after typing stops; click "Save" when finished.
- Other space members, including space administrators, cannot see your private notes.
- Click the title row to collapse or expand.
- Inserting still requires editing permission in the space. In a view-only space, favorite the content and use "Notes (optional)" when saving it; see Favorites.
Reorder and move between nodes
Reorder blocks or move several to another node without deleting and rewriting them.
- Enter edit mode, hover over the bottom-right "+", and click "Reorder blocks".
- A checkbox and dotted drag handle appear on the left of each block. Drag the handle vertically to reorder.
- To move to another node, select blocks and click "Move (N)" at the upper right of the content. Shift-click a checkbox to select a consecutive range.
- Choose a space in "Choose a target space", then a node in "Choose a target location", and click "Move here". A confirmation reports how many items moved, including whether they moved across spaces.
- Click "Done reordering" at the bottom right to finish.
- "Select all (N)" selects every block on the page.
- Dragging any selected block moves the selected group together.
- You can move content only to spaces you can edit.
- The bottom-right "+" temporarily hides while a block is being edited.
Saving, undo, and simultaneous editing
Knowing when changes are saved helps prevent lost work.
- Text blocks: autosave after 2 seconds without typing. The green bottom "Save" saves immediately and closes the editor on success. Leaving edit mode or switching nodes also attempts to save pending edits.
- Failures are shown: the editor displays "Save failed", an error message, or "Some changes weren't saved", retaining your content for retry. If you already switched nodes, a notice says the previous edits were not saved; go back and restore anything missing.
- If saving keeps failing and you cannot leave edit mode: the "Some changes weren't saved" dialog lists affected blocks by their opening text and gives reasons. "Stay in edit mode" (or
Esc) changes nothing. "Discard changes and exit" restores those blocks to their last saved content and leaves edit mode. Discarded changes cannot be recovered, so copy the text first if needed. Successfully saved blocks are unaffected, including saves that finish while the dialog is open. - Academic and private note editors: body text autosaves, but academic metadata such as type and title requires "Save"; see Academic blocks.
- Closing or refreshing gives no unsaved warning: closing less than 2 seconds after typing can lose the last few characters. Click "Save" before leaving.
- No version history or trash: the deletion confirmation warns that the action cannot be undone. Within the editor, Ctrl+Z (⌘Z on Mac) can undo recent typing.
- Two people editing the same block: the last save wins, overwriting earlier changes without a conflict warning. Divide up blocks when collaborating.
- Content busy with another operation: a message asks you to retry when content is being moved, imported, or deleted in the same space. Wait a few seconds and click "Save" again.
- Length limit: a block supports at most 1 million characters. Splitting long content into several blocks also makes it easier to read.
The mobile app can create and edit text, problems, and notes, but cannot insert images, drawings, or interactive demos. Save manually; see What the app can do. Offline web use is read-only; see Offline capabilities and limits.
Notes: Smart Import
Give AI a lecture-note PDF, problem screenshot, or photographed material and turn it into Votion notes. Text and formulas become blocks; problems, examples, and theorems become academic blocks, including any solutions or proofs in the original. Figures are redrawn as editable diagrams. Whole-document import can also create child nodes matching the source's chapters. You no longer need to type every formula or trace every figure. Imported content is ordinary notes: edit it, put it in a study plan, or discuss it with AI. The mobile app also supports taking photos and recording audio directly.
What to import and where it goes
Choose an entry point based on your material and where you want the result.
The website and app have different entry points and destinations:
| Website | Mobile app | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Edit mode on a node page: bottom-right "+", "Insert", editor toolbar, or academic-block editor | Import area in the bottom AI tab |
| Material | One image or PDF | One PDF; up to 20 photos from the gallery or camera; or live audio recording |
| Audio | Unsupported | Live recording only |
| Processing | "Import now" by default; wait in the dialog. PDFs also support "Import in background" | All imports run in the background |
| Model tier | Flash / Pro for immediate imports; Pro for background imports | Pro (audio uses a dedicated transcription process) |
| Destination | Current node: whole immediate imports create children, background imports append to it, and small entry points insert where specified | A new node per import in your personal space's Inbox |
| Progress and retries | Immediate import shows progress in its dialog; background imports have details, cancel, retry, and delete in "Account › Import tasks" | Task list: view results, cancel, delete; no retry |
The website has four entry points:
- Whole material, such as a handout or page: bottom-right "+" → "Smart Import"; see Web: import a whole document.
- One problem, theorem, or note: "Insert" between blocks → "Smart Import"; see Import one problem or block.
- Text into the block you are editing: "Smart Import" in the editor toolbar.
- Fill an academic-block form: "Recognize with AI" at the top right of its editor.
Requirements:
- Available Thought Points: non-members can also buy points to use this feature. Your balance is checked before each AI call. If insufficient, the task pauses and keeps its progress; see Continue a task.
- Edit access: web imports write to the current space, requiring "Editor", "Admin", or "Owner" (see Roles and permissions). Viewers have no edit mode or import entry points. App imports write only to your personal space.
- Connection: an offline import dialog shows "Offline mode" and asks you to use the feature online.
Web: import a whole document
Give AI a full handout PDF or material image. Recognized chapters become a subtree under the current node, with text, formulas, and problems placed appropriately.
- Open the destination node, then enter edit mode with
ior the header pencil (see Edit mode). Imported content goes beneath this node. - Hover over the round "+" at the bottom right. Two smaller round buttons appear; click the purple star (tooltip "Smart Import").
- Add a file in "Smart Import a document": click the upload area, drag a file in, or paste a screenshot using Ctrl+V on Windows or ⌘V on Mac. Paste immediately after opening the dialog, before selecting options below.
- Choose "Model": Flash is faster; Pro is more accurate and better at structure, but usually slower, with charges based on actual usage (see Thought Points and Flash / Pro). This browser remembers the choice and shares it with AI chat and AI solving.
- Choose "Import mode". The default is "Import now"; for longer PDFs, choose "Import in background". See the comparison below.
- Choose "Image format" for redrawn figures:
- "Auto": AI chooses from the image.
- "Excalidraw": diagrams, flowcharts, and sketch-style figures (see Drawings).
- "JessieCode": geometry and function plots (see Interactive diagrams).
- Click "Start import".
Limits:
- Types: PNG, JPEG, JPG, WEBP, PDF. Other formats trigger a supported-file-types warning.
- One file per import. Paste accepts only images; choose or drag PDFs.
- Maximum file size: 10 MB. Oversized files are rejected as soon as you add them. Compress large PDFs or split by chapter; see Quota and limits.
- Original images are not inserted unchanged. AI redraws figures in an editable format. Proportions and labels may differ, so compare them carefully.
- Web imports do not support recordings. Record live in the mobile app instead; see Mobile app.
Immediate and background imports
The modes produce different structures. Choose according to your needs:
| Import now (default) | Import in background | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Images or short PDFs when you want chapter structure | Longer PDFs |
| Files | Images or PDF | PDF only, at most 50 pages |
| Waiting | Wait for AI in the dialog | The dialog closes once the task is created; you can do something else |
| Result | Recognized chapters become child nodes, possibly nested, with content in the appropriate nodes | No child nodes; all blocks append in order after the current node's existing content |
| Model and image format | Your dialog choices | Pro recognition, charged by the actual model and usage; image format fixed to Auto |
| Progress | In the dialog | Import tasks page |
Import now: after "Start import", progress shows "AI is recognizing the content structure...", "Validating data...", "Preparing import...", then individual creation and import messages, and finally "Import complete!". The dialog closes, "Smart Import complete!" appears at the top right, and new children appear in the outline.
- If AI omits fields such as a chapter title, the system supplies defaults (such as an unnamed node numbered 1) and leaves a persistent notice saying how many fields were filled automatically. Check and correct them in the new nodes.
- Material recognized as handwritten annotations or personal reflections becomes "Notes" blocks, visible only to you (see Private notes).
Import in background:
- Select "Import in background", add a PDF, and click "Start import".
- After upload, "Import task created. The document will be processed in the background." appears at the top right. Click "View task" in the notice, or later find it in "Account › Import tasks" (see Import tasks).
- Once "Completed", return to the destination node (refresh if it remained open). New content is appended after existing blocks.
- AI processes PDFs in batches of 6 pages. Content is written to the node all at once only after every batch is recognized. Seeing no new content while processing is normal.
- There is no completion notification; check "Import tasks" yourself.
- Background mode applies only to PDFs. Images use immediate import even if background mode is selected.
- The dialog's model and image-format choices affect only immediate imports.
Duplicate imports
For background imports, if the same file was previously imported and its task is complete, processing, or waiting, the dialog shows "This file has been imported before" with the earlier destination and time. Files are compared by content; renaming does not make them different. Choose:
- "Import into the current node again": reuse the previous recognition result without another AI call or Thought Point charge. Permission and capacity requirements still apply. Only completed tasks can be reused this way.
- "View previous task": inspect the earlier task.
- "Cancel": stop this import.
A task marked "Reused result" reused an earlier result without calling AI. Immediate imports do not check duplicates; they recognize the file anew each time.
The app also checks previously imported files, such as the same PDF, and shows the earlier destination and time. It offers actions to:
- View import tasks: open the list, then view a completed task's result to open the notes.
- Import anyway, available only after the earlier task completed: reuse recognition to create another note in Inbox without calling AI. Use this if the earlier imported notes were deleted.
- Cancel this import.
Web: import one problem or block
To put one problem, theorem, or short passage at a specific position in existing notes, use a smaller entry point.
| Entry | Location | Result |
|---|---|---|
| "Smart Import" in "Insert" | Between blocks in edit mode | One academic block (problem or theorem type) or private note at this position |
| "Smart Import" in the editor toolbar | Below a text editor (called "Import" in "Split" mode) | Recognized Markdown inserted at the cursor |
| "Recognize with AI" in an academic-block editor | Top right of the form | Recognition fills the form fields |
Import a photographed problem:
- In edit mode, hover between blocks and click "Insert". At the beginning it is "Insert at top"; an empty node shows "Add content" (see Insert blocks).
- At the bottom of "Choose a content type", click "Smart Import".
- Choose "Import as":
- "Problem": recognize a statement and solution.
- "Theorems": recognize theorems, lemmas, corollaries, definitions, and similar blocks.
- "Notes": recognize structured notes.
- Choose "Model" and "Image format", add an image or PDF under "Upload file", then click "Start recognition".
- The title becomes "Review recognized content". Edit type, title, difficulty (problems and examples only), source, and comma-separated tags. Switch between the two body fields on the left: "Problem statement" / "Solution" for problems, or type-specific labels such as "Statement" / "Proof". Notes have only a title and body.
- Click "Save" when satisfied, or "Recognize again" to return to upload and retry.
- Problems and theorem types become academic blocks visible to everyone who can view the node (see Academic blocks). Notes are private to you.
- "Smart Import" is absent when inserting inside an academic block, such as adding blocks to a solution.
The other two entry points:
- "Smart Import" in a text editor inserts recognized text at the cursor and shows "Inserted the content recognized by AI. Please check it."
- "Recognize with AI" in an academic editor fills the form and shows "The recognized content has been filled in. Please review it before saving." Check it, then save.
Import tasks
Each background or mobile import creates a task. View progress, cancel, retry, and clean up here.
- ①Account › Import tasks
- ②Status filters
- ③Progress and status (processing 1/3)
- ④Retry task after failure
- Click "Account", then "Import tasks" on the left ①. "View task" in the import notice opens a task directly.
- Filter with the buttons above ②: "All", "In progress", "Waiting", "Completed", or "Failed".
- Each card ③ shows file name, destination node, progress and batch counts, status (waiting / processing / waiting for more Thought Points / waiting for capacity / completed / failed / cancelled), and creation time. Failed tasks show a red reason below.
- Icons on the right open details, "Cancel task" for waiting or processing tasks, "Continue task" for tasks paused for points or capacity, "Retry task" for tasks that actually failed or were cancelled ④, and "Delete task" for any task not currently processing.
While tasks are processing, the page refreshes every few seconds. You can also click "Refresh" at the top right.
Task details:
- The top says "Imported content is recognized and organized by AI and may contain mistakes. Please check it in the corresponding notes."
- The node link after "Import target:" opens the imported content.
- "Import progress", creation and completion times, and failure reasons appear. Reused tasks say "This task reused the results of an earlier import".
- Buttons include "Cancel task" while waiting or processing, "Continue task" when paused for insufficient points or capacity, "Retry failed batches" when actually failed or cancelled, and "Refresh".
- "Batch details" lists each batch's number, page range (for example batch 2, pages 7-12), and status. "AI returned", an extra status here, means recognition is complete and waiting for other batches or for writing into notes. Failed batches have "Retry this batch" on the right.
Paused for insufficient points or capacity: resolve the reason shown, then return to the original task and click "Continue task". Do not upload the file again or rerun completed AI steps. For insufficient capacity, free up space or activate membership, then continue saving the recognition results already stored; the same recognition step is not charged again. A top-up does not resume the task automatically; see Resuming a task.
If a task fails:
- Failures do not retry automatically. "Retry task" or "Retry failed batches" reruns only failed batches. Successfully recognized batches are kept. If recognition finished but saving to notes failed, retry writes those existing results directly.
- A retry requiring a new AI call still checks Thought Points. A write-only retry does not call AI or spend points, but permission and capacity requirements still apply.
- Saved tasks and results are recovered after system updates or restarts. Completed recognition batches are not repeated. Steps that were running but whose results are still unknown must be reconciled first; they are not immediately called or charged again. Tasks paused for insufficient points still require you to continue manually.
- Common reasons:
- A message that N batches failed: recognition failed for those batches; retry usually helps.
- "The target node or space does not exist": the destination was deleted; import into another node.
Cancel and delete:
- Cancellation asks "Cancel this task? You can start the import again later." Unstarted batches stop after cancellation. "Retry task" resumes them.
- Deleting a task removes the records needed to continue it, so first make sure you no longer need to resume it. Imported notes are unaffected. Deleting failed or cancelled tasks also frees the original file's storage when no other task uses it.
Mobile app: camera, gallery, PDF, and recordingApp only
Photograph a board or stack of homework, or record a classroom explanation, and let AI process it in the background. You need not watch the screen. For installation, see Download and update.
Open the bottom AI tab. Its import area provides:
- PDF selection from your phone.
- Multiple-image selection from the gallery.
- Camera capture and recognition.
- Live audio recording and transcription.
- A task list showing the number running, or an entry to historical tasks when none are running.
Import a PDF:
- Select a PDF of at most 10 MB.
- In the confirmation, choose figure output: automatic, ED (Excalidraw), or JC (JessieCode), then start importing.
- Confirm the task-created message to open the task list. Previously imported files instead show a duplicate notice; see Duplicate imports.
Import photos:
- Select multiple gallery images or take a photo, which you can crop afterward.
- Arrange them on the photo-editing page: at most 20; crop or delete each, and long-press to reorder. AI recognizes them in this order. Add more through the camera or gallery actions. The top shows count and total size.
- Choose the figure format, then start the import using the button showing the photo count.
Import recordings:
- Open audio import and record one or more parts. Each is at most 3 minutes, with at most 10 minutes total. The page shows these limits and the time remaining.
- Preview, delete, or long-press to reorder recorded parts.
- Start the import.
- Only live recording is supported; existing audio files cannot be selected.
- Transcription stays faithful sentence by sentence: it removes fillers such as "um" and "ah" and repeated words, adds punctuation, converts spoken formulas to LaTeX (for example, "x squared" to
$x^2$), and adds small headings or lists where helpful. It does not summarize or rewrite. - Leaving with unimported recordings warns that going back will lose them.
Where results go:
- The app does not ask for a destination. It creates a new node for each import inside Inbox at the root of your personal space. Inbox is created at the end of the root on first import.
- The node title uses the opening heading, or first line if there is no heading, followed by the import date and time, such as "Newton's second law_2026-09-28_14:30". If neither is available, it uses a type-based name, such as "Audio notes_2026-09-28_14:30".
- Inbox is a system node and cannot be renamed, deleted, or moved. Imported children are ordinary nodes: rename or move them elsewhere in your personal space (see Create, rename, move, and delete).
Task list:
- Each task shows type (document, images, or audio), status, and creation time. Active tasks show progress and n/m batches; failed tasks show the reason.
- Open a completed task's result to go directly to the imported node. Cancel active tasks or delete ended ones.
- The red number on the bottom AI icon totals waiting, processing, and failed tasks.
- There is no retry button in the app. Retry on the web Import tasks page, which also lists app-created tasks.
Quota and limits
A quick check before importing prevents most avoidable failures.
Thought Points:
- Every recognition consumes Thought Points from the same account as AI chat, solving, and the AI Tutor (see Thought Points). Background and app image/document imports default to Pro, but charges use the actual model and usage, without a fixed tier multiplier.
- Background and app imports check points before every paid AI call. If points run short, the task pauses while keeping source material, recognized results, and progress. After topping up, return to the original task and continue manually; completed batches are not repeated. See Continue a task after running out of points.
Storage and content capacity:
- Background and app imports upload and store files first, counting toward storage. Full storage gives an error with used / limit values. Completion cleans up originals and releases that storage.
- Eligibility—permissions, available Thought Points, capacity, and queued-task count—is checked before saving files. Rejected imports explain why and do not store the file or consume storage.
- Resulting nodes and blocks count toward content capacity (see Capacity limits). Known capacity shortages block new generation. If a shortage is discovered after generation, the task pauses and keeps its results and progress. Free capacity or activate membership, then continue manually; completed recognition is not charged again.
Files:
- Website: one PNG, JPEG, JPG, WEBP, or PDF. App: one PDF, up to 20 photos, or up to 10 minutes of live recording.
- Maximum 10 MB per file. Multiple photos or recordings in one app import share a combined 10 MB limit. The photo editor shows total size; split oversized selections into two imports. Even a full 10-minute recording stays within the limit.
- Oversized files are rejected before upload. The website shows the 10MB limit immediately; the app explains that the file is too large and gives the limit. Compress or split large PDFs by chapter.
- Background and app PDFs allow at most 50 pages. Longer files show a page-limit message; split them by chapter.
- By default, at most 10 tasks may be queued or processing at once. Wait for earlier tasks to finish before adding more. When site-wide demand is high, you may see "The import queue is busy. Try again later."
System admins can also import already prepared Markdown directly through the command line, without AI or Thought Point charges; see votion CLI.
Study plans: creating and viewingFree
Forgetting what you studied? Give a study plan the chapters you want to master. It schedules a little new content each day and brings learned material back for review as you begin to forget. Open it daily, study, and assess yourself honestly; it remembers the rest.
This chapter explains what plans do, how to create one, and what the numbers mean. For daily study, self-assessment, and quizzes, see Study plans: study, review, and quizzes.
What is a study plan?
A study plan turns material you want to remember into manageable daily tasks and tracks when each block needs review.
Memories fade over time. Reviewing just before you forget takes less effort and lasts longer than repeatedly reading everything in one sitting. This is spaced repetition, the basis of study plans:
- Progress is tracked per block. Each explanation, problem, or theorem is a separate study item with its own review date. Known and unfamiliar material are tracked separately; one difficult problem does not mean repeating the whole chapter.
- New content is learned in batches, one batch a day (see How batches are scheduled).
- Your ratings determine review dates. After each item, choose "Forgot", "Fuzzy", or "Remembered". Well-remembered items wait longer; forgotten ones return the next day (see Three ratings and review intervals).
- Progress is visible. Every plan shows mastery, due reviews, and workload forecasts for the coming weeks (see Plan details).
Before starting:
- Creating plans, studying, reviewing, and generating random quizzes online are free and consume no Thought Points. Export and offline use require membership; new AI generation is charged in points.
- Plans belong only to you. Other group members cannot see your plans or ratings.
- Plans select content from notes, so notes must exist first: in your personal space, the public space, or an accessible group space.
- Open "Study plan" (the compass) in the web header, or "Make a plan" on the home page. The mobile app's study tab lets you study existing plans but not create them (see Offline and mobile study).
Plan list
See which plans need review today, check mastery, and start studying here.
Click "Study plan" in the header to open "My study plans".
- ①New plan
- ②Reviews due today
- ③Mastery
- ④This plan is due soon
- ⑤Filter
- "New plan" at the top right (①) creates a plan; see Create a plan.
- With many plans, use "Search study plans..." to search names, "Filter" (⑤) to filter by status and type, or "Sort:" to sort by "Created", "Name", "Progress", or "Due date". Click the same sort option again to reverse it.
- The two icons on the right switch between grid and list views.
Each card shows:
- The plan name, status ("Active" or "Archived"), batch count, and creation date. The top right shows ∞ for open-ended plans or the total days for deadline plans.
- A "Mastery" bar (③) and four figures: "Due reviews", "Mastery", "Avg. study sessions", and "Efficiency". See Statistics.
- A blue information strip: "No deadline — study at your own pace" for open-ended plans; the target date and remaining days for deadline plans.
- The main button changes with the situation:
- "Review (N)" (②): N items are due; click to start reviewing.
- "Start studying": no reviews are due and new content is available today.
- "Done for today": today's work is finished (greyed out).
- "Completed": all batches have been learned (greyed out). When reviews become due, it becomes "Review (N)" again.
- Beside it are "View details", an archive icon (tooltip "Archive"), and red "Delete" text. See Archive and delete.
- Within 3 days of a deadline, the card turns orange with "⚠️ This plan is due soon — consider picking up the pace" (④). After the target date, it turns red, shows how many days overdue it is, and says "⏰ The target date has passed. You can still finish the remaining batches, or create a new plan to reschedule."
Create a plan
Select the chapters you want to master and create a plan in about a minute. You can start today.
- Click "New plan" on "My study plans" to open "Create a study plan". The two steps at the top are "Basic info" and "Choose content".
- Enter a name under "Plan name *", such as "Year 10 Physics · Final review".
- Under "Plan type *", choose "Open-ended study" (the default) or "Study to a deadline". See Open-ended and deadline plans.
- Under "Space *", choose the space containing your material. Each plan uses content from only one space.
- Click "Next: choose content". It is disabled if the name is missing, or if a deadline plan has no target date.
- Check chapters in the "Choose what to study" tree. Selecting a chapter also selects its children; a chapter with only some children selected has a partial-selection mark (①). See Choose content.
- Check "Plan summary" for the name, type, and selected-node count, then click "Create plan" (④). The button is disabled when nothing is selected.
- After "Study plan created", you are taken to its details page. Today's first batch is ready.
- ①Partial selection: some sections selected
- ②Selected nodes (with content)
- ③Select all / Deselect all
- ④Create plan
Possible validation messages:
- "The target date must be in the future": the deadline is in the past; go back and change it.
- A name-length error: names cannot exceed 255 characters; go back and shorten it.
- A node-limit error: each plan allows at most 1000 nodes; split the selection into several plans.
Open-ended and deadline plans
The only difference is how new content is scheduled across days.
- "Open-ended study": one node per batch, one batch per day, starting on the creation date. No deadline or time pressure; missing a few days does not invalidate it.
- "Study to a deadline": also enter "Target date *" (date and time); the form shows the days remaining. All new content is scheduled before that date, reserving a final review-only period (about two weeks when time permits, less when time is tight). Earlier days divide new content into batches by block count. A batch may span several days. Cards and details show a countdown.
For either type, each item's review interval depends only on your ratings. The target date does not change those intervals.
Choose content
Check chapters in a tree like the outline. Your selection defines the material the plan asks you to master.
- Only the first level is expanded initially. Click a checkbox or its row to select; click the arrow to expand children.
- Selecting a chapter selects all its descendants. Click again to deselect them all.
- The toolbar's selected-node and content-bearing-node counts (②) distinguish the total selected nodes, including partially selected parents, from nodes that actually contain blocks. In the source example X/Y, Y is the selected count and X the count with content. Grouping-only chapters with no blocks do not enter the plan; selecting them is harmless.
- "Select all" on the right becomes "Deselect all" once something is selected (③). The refresh button, "Refresh the node tree (clears the current selection)", clears your choices; use it carefully.
- Changing the space in step one also clears the selection.
- If you select only a child chapter, blocks written directly in its parent chapter also enter the plan.
- Each plan allows at most 1000 selected nodes.
To build a plan from favorites, choose your personal space under "Space *", then select folders under "My favorites". Favorite items display their original content during study; a favorite of a whole node is scheduled as one node. See Favorites.
How batches are scheduled
Plans divide new material into batches, asking you to learn one per day rather than everything at once.
- Both types follow outline order, top to bottom. A chapter's own blocks are learned before its child chapters.
- In open-ended plans, one node is one batch per day, starting on the creation date. Nodes with more blocks make heavier days; smaller ones make lighter days.
- In deadline plans, small chapters may be combined to balance block counts. Very large nodes are split across neighboring batches. If a batch spans several days, you may learn it on any of those days.
- Preview each batch in Browse batches on the details page.
- Due reviews come before new content: review first, then learn (see Start studying).
- Missed batches do not expire. The next session resumes the earliest unfinished batch. After completing one, click "Continue studying" on the completion page to catch up on the next.
- If no reviews or new content are due today (today's batch is finished or nothing was scheduled), but unfinished batches remain, details shows "Today's study is done" and "Start the next batch early". Clicking it moves the next unfinished batch to today. A message confirms which batch is ready, and you can start immediately. Later batch dates stay unchanged.
Plan details
Details shows your progress, today's work, and the workload ahead.
Click "View details" on a plan card.
- ①Review first
- ②Random quiz
- ③Due reviews / Avg. study sessions / Mastery / Efficiency
- ④Progress and today's suggestion
- At the top: "Back to plans", the plan name, status, and type ("Open-ended study" or "Study to a deadline").
- The main button (①) follows the card's review-first rule: "Review (N)" for due reviews, "Continue studying" for today's new material, "Done for today" when today's work is finished, and "All done" once every batch is learned.
- "Random quiz" (②) draws problems from the plan to make a paper; see Random quizzes.
- The information strip shows "Plan type", "Created", and "Last studied" ("Not started yet" before any study). Deadline plans also show "Target date" and "Days left", changing to "Due" after expiry.
- Four statistic cards (③): "Due reviews", "Avg. study sessions", "Mastery", and "Efficiency". See Statistics.
- The "Progress" card shows the current batch X / Y and a progress bar, followed by one of four suggestions (④):
- N items need review: complete the reviews first.
- "Ready for new content": no reviews are due; learn today's batch.
- "Today's study is done": includes "Start the next batch early" (see How batches are scheduled).
- "All new content learned!": only periodic reviews remain.
- Below are "Quiz history" (see Random quizzes), "Daily workload", and "Browse batches".
Statistics
The four figures on cards and the details page are calculated as follows:
| Figure | Meaning | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| "Due reviews" | Items due now | Blocks whose review time has arrived and that you can still access; revoked content is excluded |
| "Mastery" | Mastery across the whole plan | Sum of each block's mastery divided by the plan's total block count; unstudied blocks count as 0 |
| "Avg. study sessions" | Average times each block has been studied | Total ratings across all blocks divided by the block count |
| "Efficiency" | Mastery gained per study session on average | Mastery ÷ average study sessions |
- Unstudied blocks count as 0, so a new plan's mastery is often very low, showing "<1%". This is normal; it rises as you study.
- See Three ratings and review intervals for how a block's mastery changes with ratings.
- The mastery bar is green at 70% or above, orange at 40% or above, red below that, and grey before you start.
Daily workload
This chart shows which upcoming days may be busy so you can plan your time.
- ①Daily average / Peak / Pending reviews / Days
- ②New blocks (blue)
- ③Estimated reviews (orange, weighted)
- ④Average daily workload
- The horizontal axis covers today and the next 60 days; deadline plans extend at least to the target date.
- Blue bars show scheduled new blocks (②), orange bars show estimated reviews (③), and the grey dashed line is average daily workload (④).
- Orange bars are forecasts, not exact counts. Whether you will have forgotten a block can only be estimated, so counts are weighted by the probability of forgetting and may include decimals.
- The four figures above (①) are "Daily average" (only days with tasks), "Peak" (the busiest day), "Pending reviews" (items due before today and still unreviewed), and "Days" (the number shown in the chart).
- "Live · based on your actual study records" means the chart uses your ratings so far. Click "Refresh" to recalculate.
- This chart is unavailable in web offline mode; see Offline and mobile study.
Browse batches
Preview upcoming material or read through it without affecting study records.
- Find "Browse batches" on the details page. It contains "Batches overview" and the batch count.
- Each batch row shows its number, status ("Completed" or "Upcoming"), block count, and scheduled date.
- Click "Browse" to open the batch and move through its items.
- Use ← → to turn pages, Space to show or hide answers, and Esc to close. The footer says "Use ← → to navigate, Space to show or hide the answer, Esc to close".
- Browsing does not count as a study session or change review dates.
- It is unavailable in web offline mode; see Offline and mobile study.
Archive and delete
Archive plans you no longer study to keep their records. Delete plans you are sure you do not need.
To archive:
- Click the archive icon (tooltip "Archive") on a plan card in either grid or list view. Only "Active" plans have this icon.
- Wait for "Study plan archived".
- Archived plans remain in the list with "Archived" status. You can view statistics, but cannot study or generate quizzes. Mobile review reminders exclude them.
- The interface cannot unarchive a plan. To study again, create a new plan with the same chapters.
To delete:
- Click the red "Delete" on a grid-view card.
- The confirmation names the plan and warns that deletion cannot be undone. Click "Delete".
- Study plan pages are unavailable in web offline mode. Go online to archive or delete; see Offline and mobile study.
Study plans: study, review, and quizzes
Once your plan is ready, each day is simple: open it, finish due reviews, learn today's new content, and rate yourself honestly on each item. Every "Remembered", "Fuzzy", or "Forgot" helps schedule when that item returns.
This chapter covers the study page, ratings and review intervals, random quizzes, paper export, reminders, and offline use. For creating plans and understanding their statistics, see Study plans: creating and viewing.
Start studying
Start today's session from a plan card or its details page. The system decides whether reviews or new material come first.
- On "My study plans", click "Review (N)" or "Start studying" on a card. On details, click "Review (N)" or "Continue studying".
- While online, the session's content is downloaded first. You see "Downloading study content", "Unpacking data", and "Ready", then the study page opens.
Reviews come before new content:
- If any reviews are due, this session is a review, labelled "Review" at the top. Consolidating material before you forget is more useful than rushing into new material.
- After finishing reviews, return to the plan. If new material is available today, the button becomes "Continue studying". Click again for a session labelled "New content".
- Each review session contains at most 50 items. If the card says "Review (80)", finish 50, then return for the remaining 30.
What counts as an item:
- Every block in each selected chapter is a study item.
- Academic blocks (problems, theorems, definitions, and so on; see Academic blocks) are labelled "Practice". The problem or statement appears first; expanded content such as solutions and proofs appears only after "Show answer". With no solution, "Show answer" is disabled.
- Other blocks are labelled "Theory"; read them and rate yourself.
- Plans built from favorites display the original content in both new-study and review sessions.
If nothing is available, the page explains why:
- "Today's study is done": today's new material is complete. To continue, return to details and click "Start the next batch early" (see How batches are scheduled).
- "Nothing scheduled today": no new content is scheduled for today.
The study page
Here you work through each item: read, think, check the answer, and assess yourself.
- ①Study plan · New content
- ②Show answer / Hide answer
- ③Forgot / Fuzzy / Remembered
- ④Clicking without a rating records Remembered
- ⑤One dot per item; click to jump
Page layout:
- Top: "Study plan" and "Review" or "New content" badges (①), item X / Y, elapsed minutes, and the "Export quiz" icon on the right (see Export a quiz paper).
- Below the progress bar: "Show answer" on the left (②), changing to "Hide answer"; one dot per item in the middle (⑤), blue for the current item, green for rated items, grey for unrated items. Click a dot to jump. The three ratings, "Forgot", "Fuzzy", and "Remembered", are on the right (③).
- The content card: the node name, mastery percentage, study count, and type ("Practice" or "Theory"). Answers appear below the content under "Hint / answer:".
- Tall buttons on either side: "Previous" on the left and "Next" on the right. Narrow windows show only icons.
For each item:
- Read it. For a problem, think it through or solve it on paper before clicking "Show answer" to compare.
- Choose "Forgot", "Fuzzy", or "Remembered" honestly. Rating does not advance automatically. Before leaving the item, you can change an accidental rating by selecting another.
- Click "Next". Leaving through "Next", "Previous", or a dot saves the rating. Returning later shows "Rated today", and you cannot change it.
- After rating the last item, the right button shows the finish-study action across two lines. Click it for the completion page; any outstanding ratings are submitted together. Every item must be rated. If some are missing, a message lists their positions and blocks completion. Use their dots to rate them, then return to the last dot and finish.
- Each item records only one rating per day.
- There are no rating keyboard shortcuts; click the buttons.
- Submitting too quickly shows "Too many requests. Please try again later." Wait briefly before trying again.
Three ratings and review intervals
Ratings set each item's review rhythm: remembered material returns less often; forgotten material returns soon.
| Rating | Next review | Item mastery |
|---|---|---|
| "Forgot" | After 1 day | Resets to zero |
| "Fuzzy" | After 1 day | Halved |
| "Remembered" | First after 6 days, then increasingly longer, for example 6 → 16 → 45 days | Fills 60% of the gap to 100% each time: 0 → 60% → 84% → 94% |
For example, at 9 pm on Monday you first study a block on Newton's second law and choose "Remembered".
-
It becomes due 6 days later, at 9 pm on Sunday, and appears in review.
-
Choose "Remembered" again and the next review is 16 days later; remember it again and it is 45 days later.
-
If you choose "Fuzzy" or "Forgot" in between, it returns at the same time the following day, then restarts from a 6-day interval. Its future intervals also grow more slowly.
-
Due times are exact times, not just dates. "Forgot" at 10 pm returns at 10 pm the next day.
-
Both "Fuzzy" and "Forgot" return tomorrow. The difference is mastery: "Fuzzy" halves it, while "Forgot" resets it to zero.
Completion page
After each session, the completion page summarizes how you did.
- The title is "Review complete!" or "Study complete!", with an encouraging message below.
- "Performance": "Accuracy" is the proportion rated "Remembered". At least 90% is "Excellent", at least 80% "Good", at least 70% "Fair", and below that "Needs work". It also shows "Total time" and average seconds per item.
- "Details": total items and counts for "Remembered", "Fuzzy", and "Forgot", plus a "Breakdown".
- "Study tips" appears if any items were "Fuzzy" or "Forgot".
- Bottom buttons: "Back to plan" returns to details. After new content, "Continue studying" lets you work on another available batch, such as a missed one. Review completion has no continue button; return to the plan to start again.
Random quizzes
Test yourself with a randomly drawn quiz. Less familiar problems are more likely to appear.
- Click "Random quiz" on plan details. The dialog says "Randomly draw problems from the study plan to make a quiz".
- Check the figures at the top (①): "Current round", "Problems in the selected nodes", "Already used this round", and "Available".
- Enter a "Number of problems" (②), default 10. The hint shows the maximum available.
- Under "Choose nodes", select the chapters to draw from. All are selected by default; deselect any you do not want. The bottom shows the selected-node count (③).
- Click "Create quiz" (④). A success message gives the problem count, then the answering page opens.
- Use it like the study page: show answers, rate, and click "Next". The top badge is purple and identifies the random quiz and round N. Completion shows a message with the total problem count.
- ①Current round and available problems
- ②Number of problems
- ③Selected nodes
- ④Create quiz
- Only academic blocks are drawn, including problems, theorems, and definitions. Ordinary text blocks are excluded. An empty selection shows "There are no Problems in the selected Nodes".
- Less familiar problems are more likely to appear: a problem with 0 mastery has roughly 10 times the chance of one above 90% mastery.
- Problems do not repeat within a round. Once all have been used, the next quiz begins a new round automatically.
- You can request at most 500 problems. If you request more than remain in the round, the quiz uses the remaining count.
- Web offline mode cannot generate quizzes; see Offline and mobile study.
The "Quiz history" card on details lists every generated quiz with its round and problem count. Completed ones show answered / total and accuracy; unfinished ones show "In progress". Click an entry to reopen it. Before your first quiz, it says "No quizzes yet".
Export a quiz paper
Members can export material as PDF or Word to print and work on paper. Exporting existing content does not consume Thought Points; points without membership do not unlock export.
- Click the "Export quiz" icon at the top of a study or quiz session.
- In the export panel, check "Include answers / explanations" if needed. It is unchecked by default, so the paper has no answers.
- Under "Format", choose PDF or Word, then click "Export".
- Wait for "Generating quiz" to finish. The file downloads automatically and you see "Quiz generated".
What is exported:
-
From a quiz session: that quiz's problems, with a title identifying the random quiz and round N.
-
From a study session: for open-ended plans, all blocks in the chapter containing the session's first item; for deadline plans, the current batch. Interactive demos are omitted.
-
Each account can run only one export at a time, shared with note exports (see Export).
-
Quiz export is unavailable in web offline mode; see Offline and mobile study.
Due reminders
How do you know a review is due? On the website, check yourself. The mobile app can remind you.
Website:
- No notifications are sent, and the header has no due-review count. Open "Study plan"; "Review (N)" and "Due reviews" on the cards show the work due.
Mobile app:
- Open the bottom settings tab.
- Enable review reminders in the study-reminders group (on by default). Its description says that due reviews trigger notifications and update the app-icon badge.
- When the phone asks whether Votion may send notifications at app login, allow it.
- The phone system lets the app check in the background roughly hourly; the exact timing is decided by the system. With due content, you receive a study-reminder notification giving the pending count, and the app icon shows that count too.
- You cannot set a particular daily reminder time.
- Tapping the notification opens the app and clears the badge. It does not open a particular plan; find it in the study tab.
- Archived plans are excluded.
Offline and mobile study
Online study and review are free; offline features on every device require membership. Web offline mode is view-only and does not support study plans. The app can store records from an already-open study session locally and sync them later; starting a new session still requires a connection.
Web offline mode:
- Opening "Study plan" offline shows only "Study plans aren't available in offline mode". Viewing plans, studying, reviewing, generating quizzes, and exporting papers all require going online.
- Click the orange "Offline" in the header, then "Sync and go online"; see Go online and sync.
- The offline-download dialog has no study-plan selection. Plans are not included in the package.
Mobile app (bottom study tab):
- View plan lists and details, study, review, and bring the next batch forward.
- You cannot create plans. With none, the app asks you to create a plan on the website and view it here.
- Random quizzes and paper export are unavailable.
- Studying differs slightly from the web: for problems, show the answer before rating buttons appear. The three ratings mean forgotten, somewhat fuzzy (the web's "Fuzzy"), and remembered. Rating advances automatically; use the previous-item control to look back.
- Starting a study session in the app requires a connection because its content is fetched from the server. For app offline use, see App offline use and sync.
AI: solving and discussing problems
Being stuck is harder when nobody is around to ask. In Votion, AI sits beside your notes: click a problem and its statement, solutions, and images are included automatically. Just ask how a step follows. An AI-written solution can be saved directly to the problem for later review and quizzes. Use fast Flash for simple questions and deeper-thinking Pro for harder ones.
This chapter covers AI chat, "Discuss with AI", and "Solve with AI". For a blackboard lesson, see AI Tutor; to turn lecture notes or papers into notes, see Smart Import.
AI entry point
All AI features have a central entry point and shortcuts beside the notes you read.
The diamond in the middle of the header is "AI". It opens the AI features page with two cards: "AI chat" and "AI Tutor". Without tutor access, the tutor card is greyed out and marked "Not open yet".
You can also use these entry points:
| What you want to do | Where to click | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Ask a general question | "AI" → "AI chat" | Users with available Thought Points |
| Discuss a problem | "Discuss with AI" speech bubble in the problem title bar | Users who can view the problem and have available Thought Points |
| Discuss a block | Hover over the block; click "Discuss this with AI" at the top right | Users who can view the block and have available Thought Points |
| Discuss a whole page | "Discuss with AI" beside the page title | Users who can view the page and have available Thought Points |
| Write an AI solution into notes | Expand an unsolved problem in edit mode; use "Solve with AI" at the bottom | Users with available Thought Points and Editor access or higher in the space |
| Turn lecture notes or papers into notes | "Smart Import" entry points; see Smart Import | Users with available Thought Points and Editor access or higher in the space |
| Get a blackboard explanation | "Have the AI Tutor explain this" graduation cap, or the AI Tutor page | Users eligible for tutor access who have available Thought Points |
| Ask on your phone | The app's bottom AI tab | Users with available Thought Points |
- All AI features require login. Clicking "AI" while logged out shows "Log in to use AI features".
- AI features consume Thought Points. Non-members can also buy points to use them; see AI Thought Points and Flash / Pro.
- AI is unavailable in offline mode.
AI Thought Points and Flash / Pro
AI consumes Thought Points based on actual usage. Membership is not required, and the old daily/monthly quota resets do not apply. For balances, grant expiry, and top-ups, see AI Thought Points.
- Flash suits quick questions and everyday tasks; Pro can handle more complex reasoning. Choosing a tier and starting or continuing a task incurs point charges according to actual usage.
- Switching Flash / Pro does not open an extra dialog. Backend model changes or price changes do not require confirmation each time either.
- You can check actual point charges already incurred and their associated tasks and models. Backend model prices and price multipliers are not shown.
- Estimated point consumption, price ranges, and internal reservations are not shown before calls.
- Multistep tasks keep completed work if points run short. Top up and continue manually; see Continue a task after running out of points.
AI chat
AI chat is a discussion notebook you can revisit. Questions are saved automatically, so you can continue days later.
The chat list is on the left and the conversation on the right.
- Click "AI" in the header, then "AI chat".
- Click "New chat" at the top left.
- To discuss an existing problem, first click "Pick a problem"; see Pick a problem on the chat page. You can also ask without choosing one.
- Type in input at the bottom, then press ⌘/Ctrl+Enter or click Send on the right.
- AI names the chat during its first answer. You cannot rename it manually.
- The points area shows your current balance. "Model:" above the input switches Flash / Pro; see AI Thought Points and Flash / Pro.
- Chats are ordered by most recent use. Discussions started from problems, blocks, and whole pages appear here too.
- Each click on "New chat" immediately creates a chat. Delete unused empty ones as described in Edit, delete, and reset.
- This page is designed for computer screens and is cramped in phone browsers. Use the app on a phone; see AI chat on mobile.
Ask, wait, and view thinking
Specific questions get more relevant answers.
- Send: ⌘/Ctrl+Enter sends. Enter alone adds a line break, useful for multiline problems.
- While waiting: the reply area shows "AI is thinking..." and elapsed time, such as 12 seconds. Pro may take a minute or two.
- Thinking: a "Thinking" area sometimes shows the AI's current reasoning. It collapses above the reply once the final answer begins; click to reopen it. It is not saved and disappears on refresh.
- Cancel: while waiting, Send becomes a red "Cancel" button. Cancelling shows "Request cancelled" and returns your question to the input. Calls already started are charged for actual, verifiable usage. Whether text has appeared does not determine whether costs have occurred. The platform does not estimate unverifiable usage from character counts and charge for it.
- Answers: AI gives a complete, detailed explanation of key steps and reasoning. Formulas and code render normally. When useful, it creates interactive diagrams or hand-drawn illustrations in the same formats as note interactive diagrams and drawings.
- Length: each message allows approximately 100,000 characters.
Edit, delete, and reset
You do not need to start over if you asked the wrong thing or want to rephrase.
Above each AI reply, left to right:
- "AI-generated, for reference only".
- "Show source" / "Show rendered": switch between source and formatted content.
- "Copy Markdown": copy the reply source.
- A report flag; see Reliability and reporting AI content.
- "Delete this message".
Above each of your messages:
- "Edit and resend": edit, then click "Resend" for a new answer. The warning "Note: everything after this message will be cleared" means every later question and answer is deleted. ⌘/Ctrl+Enter submits edits; Esc cancels.
- "Delete this message": deletes immediately without confirmation, and removes only that message.
Reset a discussion: "Reset" at the top right opens "Reset discussion". Confirmation permanently removes all messages and pinned context. You can then choose context again or use the page's latest content; see Context is pinned at the first question.
Delete a whole chat:
- Hover over its entry in the left list to reveal the "Delete chat" trash icon.
- Click it. The confirmation says "Delete this chat? All its messages will be permanently deleted."
- Click "Delete".
- The trash icon appears only on hover and is not visible on touchscreens.
- After deleting a problem's discussion, "Discuss with AI" on that problem starts a fresh chat next time.
Voice input
Speak instead of typing. Recognized text goes into the input for you to check before sending.
- Click the "Voice input" microphone to the right of the input, above Send.
- Allow microphone access when your browser first asks.
- Speak. Use "Pause" and "Resume" as needed.
- Click "Done", check the text in the input, then send.
The system automatically selects one of two modes. The status tells you which:
| Status | How text appears | Thought Point usage |
|---|---|---|
| "Listening — text goes into the input box as you speak…" | The browser recognizes speech live | None |
| "Recording; this part is transcribed when you pause or finish…" | Records first, then transcribes each part when you pause or finish | Consumes Thought Points; membership is not required |
In recording mode, you can keep speaking without pausing. At around two and a half minutes, it splits at a pause in your speech and transcribes that part while you continue. Without a pause, it splits at three minutes at the latest. While working on the previous part, the status is "Recording; transcribing the previous part…".
Common messages:
- "Microphone access was denied. Allow it in your browser and try again." / "Couldn't access the microphone. Allow microphone access in your browser and try again.": allow the microphone in the browser's site settings, then retry.
- "Voice transcription failed; this part wasn't recognized" / "The network connection dropped and this part wasn't recognized. Check your network and say it again.": this part failed. An unstable connection is retried once automatically before showing the error. Say that part again.
- "This recording is too long to recognize. Try saying it in shorter parts.": automatic splitting normally prevents this. If it happens, use "Pause" then "Resume" to speak in shorter parts.
Discuss note content with AI
Ask where you get stuck. The problem, block, or whole page you are reading is included automatically; just ask why a step works.
There are four ways to include notes: from a problem, a block, a whole page, or a problem picked on the chat page. They share these rules:
- One discussion per location: the same problem, block, or page has one discussion for you; reopening continues it.
- Discussions are yours alone: someone else clicking "Discuss with AI" on the same problem sees their own chat.
- All appear in the chat list: find them on "AI chat" and continue any time.
- Unavailable offline: discussion dialogs show "AI discussions aren't available in offline mode".
Discuss a problem
The most common route includes the statement and solutions automatically, so you can ask directly about a difficult step.
- Find the problem (or theorem, definition, and so on) and click "Discuss with AI" in its title bar.
- A discussion dialog opens with the problem title. Its type and difficulty appear above, and you can expand the statement and solutions.
- Ask in the bottom input.
- Anyone who can view the problem can use this, without edit mode or edit access.
- AI receives the title, difficulty, source, tags, statement, and solutions. Notes attached under the problem are excluded.
- Site-hosted images in the problem are included, at most 5. An unreadable or deleted image does not prevent asking; that image is omitted and AI is told.
- Check your Thought Point balance and completed charges on the membership and usage page.
Discuss a block or whole page
Ask about other material too, such as an explanation block or a full page of notes.
A block: hover over it and click the "Discuss this with AI" speech bubble among the small buttons at the top right.
A whole page:
- Click "Discuss with AI" beside the page title.
- The dialog shows "Whole Node page" (the node's entire page), then "Choose what to send to the AI" and a selected-block count N/M.
- Select what AI should see. Only ordinary blocks are selected by default. Problems labelled "Problem" and notes labelled "Notes" must be selected manually.
- Click "Show what's actually sent" to inspect the content.
- Ask in the bottom input.
Pick a problem on the chat page
You can include a problem without being on its note page.
- Click "New chat" on "AI chat".
- Before your first question, the top shows "💡 Optionally pick a problem to discuss". Click "Pick a problem" on the right.
- Search using at least 2 characters from a title or statement. It searches all spaces you can access and lists at most 20 problems.
- Select one to use its statement and solutions as context.
- Before asking, "Remove problem" lets you choose another. After the first question, you cannot switch; create a new chat or "Reset" this one first.
Context is pinned at the first question
The discussion's reference content is fixed when you send your first question. Later exchanges use the same version, so edits to notes do not make earlier answers inconsistent.
- After the first question, the top shows "Pinned context" and explains that later edits or deletion will not affect it.
- Even if you edit the problem or notes, AI still sees the old version.
- To use the latest content, click "Reset". This clears every message in this discussion and starts again from the page's current content.
- Extremely long content (over approximately 900,000 characters) is truncated to its beginning, with a truncation notice at the end.
AI solving: save a solution into notes
For an unsolved problem, AI can write a complete solution directly into its "Solution" area. It stays with the problem in your notes and is included in exports.
The difference from "Discuss with AI" is simple: discussion only chats; solving writes a solution into your notes.
Where is the button? It appears only when all four conditions hold:
- You have Editor access or higher in the space (see Roles and permissions).
- You are in edit mode: press
ior click the header pencil (tooltip "Enter edit mode (i)"); see Edit mode. - The problem is expanded: click its title bar.
- It has no solution yet: the title bar says "Unsolved", not "Solved".
The sparkle button appears at the bottom of the expanded area. Its label depends on the block type:
| Block type | Button | Destination |
|---|---|---|
| Problem, Example | "Solve with AI" | "Solution" |
| Theorem, Corollary, Lemma, Proposition, Property, Conjecture | "Draft a proof with AI" | "Proof" |
| Definition, Axiom | "Explain with AI" | "Explanation" |
| Remark | "Expand with AI" | "Details" |
The adjacent "Discuss with AI" bubble works without edit mode and requires available Thought Points. "Have the AI Tutor explain this" appears only for eligible accounts; see AI Tutor.
Generate a solution:
- Click "Solve with AI" (or "Draft a proof with AI", and so on) to open the dialog.
- Check "Subject". The default is "Chapter's subject", inherited from the parent chapter if unset; if no ancestor sets one, a general approach is used. Select another subject manually if needed. Choosing the right subject guides the method.
- Optionally add your approach or requirements under "Your approach (optional)" ("Proof approach (optional)" for proofs, "What you'd like to know (optional)" for explanations), such as "Use the work-energy theorem" or "Do not use calculus".
- Select Flash or Pro at the bottom left.
- Click "Solve with AI" at the bottom right ("Write the proof" for proofs, "Explain" for explanations) and wait.
- The success message confirms that the solution or proof has already been saved to the problem.
- Generation cannot be cancelled; "Cancel" is disabled. Pro can take a minute or two.
- Up to 5 site-hosted images in the problem are sent; external images are not. If some cannot be attached, AI is told and states its assumptions when relying on their information.
- Generated solutions carry "AI-generated, for reference only" and a report flag.
- Failures show the reason; retry later. Offline, you see "AI features aren't available in offline mode".
- This feature is not in the mobile app.
Regenerate an unsatisfactory solution: the button appears only for "Unsolved" problems, so clear the old solution first.
- In edit mode, double-click the problem title bar to open its editor.
- Open "Solution" ("Proof" for theorem-type blocks, and so on) and delete all its content.
- Click "Save". The problem becomes "Unsolved" and the button returns.
AI chat on mobileApp only
Discuss notes with AI on your phone while travelling or waiting. Web chats also appear in the app's list.
- Tap the bottom AI tab, then start a conversation in its chat area.
- In the chat list, use the new-chat action if it is empty, or the bottom-right "+" if chats already exist.
- Choose a space. To ask without note content, use the skip action at the top right.
- Open a node, then select the blocks to discuss; a select-all action is available.
- Confirm the selection using the top-right button with the selected count, then ask.
Differences from the website:
| Website | App | |
|---|---|---|
| Include notes | Click on a problem, block, or whole page | Choose a space and node, then select blocks |
| Switch Flash / Pro | "Model:" above the input | Tap the tier below the page title and choose the fast Flash or advanced Pro option |
| Where the tier is remembered | This browser | In the app, independently of the website |
| While waiting | May show "Thinking" | Shows only a thinking status |
| Delete a message | Deletes only that message | Long-press and delete; all later messages are deleted too |
| Delete a chat | Hover over its list entry and click the trash icon | Swipe the entry left and use the delete action |
| AI solving, AI Tutor | Available | Unavailable |
- App chat supports voice input, with a recognition-mode selector; see What the app can do.
- The app's AI page also offers Smart Import from camera, images, PDFs, and recordings; see Mobile app: camera, gallery, PDF, and recording.
Reliability and reporting AI content
AI is useful but can make calculation and factual errors. Treat it as a helpful older student who sometimes gets things wrong, rather than an answer key.
- AI replies, solutions, and tutor lessons carry "AI-generated, for reference only". Hover for: "This content was generated by AI and may be inaccurate or incomplete. Think it through and verify it yourself."
- Check important conclusions against your textbook or teacher's explanation.
- If an answer seems wrong or unclear:
- Ask a follow-up, such as "Why does step two hold?" or "Can you use another method?".
- Use "Edit and resend" to rephrase.
- Switch to Pro and ask the same question again.
- Report illegal or harmful content using the flag beside the reply, solution, or blackboard header. See Feedback and reports.
AI TutorBetaWeb only
A blackboard lesson just for you: the tutor writes, draws, and explains sentence by sentence. Move at your own pace or turn on voice and automatic playback. Pause, go back, or ask whenever something is unclear.
Who can use it
The AI Tutor is still labelled beta. Access depends on the site's settings.
- Until access is opened to everyone, only system administrators and accounts on the beta list can use it. Once opened, other signed-in accounts can use it too. Disabled accounts cannot use it.
- Without access, problem cards have no graduation-cap entry, the tutor card on the AI page is unavailable, and the tutor page shows "The AI Tutor is in closed beta and isn't open yet" and "It's currently available to a limited set of accounts.". Refresh after being granted access.
- Generating new content requires available Thought Points, not membership. Membership or a top-up does not replace the tutor access conditions; see When a feature is blocked.
- Starting a lesson, asking questions, and continuing a lesson require an internet connection and are available on the website. Members can download an ended lesson as a standalone HTML file to replay it offline; points alone do not unlock downloading. See Download for offline replay. A computer screen works best.
Start a lesson
Start from a problem in your notes, or paste a problem on the AI Tutor page. Only one lesson can run per account. Available Thought Points are checked before every paid AI call; see Thought Points and paused lessons.
Start from a problem
- Click the graduation-cap "Have the AI Tutor explain this" button at the right of the problem card's title bar.
- For a new lesson, optionally enter learning needs (up to 2,000 characters) in the panel, then click "Start lesson". An existing lesson is continued or replayed. If "You have a lesson in progress" appears, choose "Continue that lesson" to return to it. Choosing to explain the current problem ends the old lesson and starts a new one; the old lesson remains available for replay.
- The blackboard opens while the tutor prepares the lesson.
- This entry defaults to Pro. Insufficient points do not guarantee an automatic switch to Flash to finish the whole lesson. For tiers and charges, see AI Thought Points and Flash / Pro.
- The tutor receives the statement, solution as preparation material, source, difficulty, and up to 5 images stored on the site. External images are not included. If the statement is missing or the selected tier cannot read the images, follow the message before trying again.
Start on the AI Tutor page
Open the AI entry in the site header, then "AI Tutor".
- ①Paste a problem
- ②Paste a problem
- ③Tutor tier (Pro / Flash)
- ④Start lesson
- ⑤Past lessons (replay or delete)
- Find "Paste a problem" ① and paste your problem in the box ②. Markdown and formulas are supported.
- Choose "Tutor: Pro" or "Tutor: Flash" in the dropdown ③. Tasks consume Thought Points based on actual usage; new generation pauses if points are insufficient.
- Click "Start lesson" ④. The button shows "Preparing the lesson…", then the blackboard opens.
- To revisit an old lesson, click its title under "Past lessons" ⑤.
- The statement can contain up to 20,000 characters. The first line of a pasted problem becomes the lesson title.
- Pasted images are not sent to the tutor. Put a problem with images in your notes first, then start from its problem card.
- Start errors appear below the page title. If all lesson slots are occupied, try again later.
Read the blackboard
The board fills the window without the site header.
- ①Lesson name and AI-generated notice
- ②Derivations
- ③Figures
- ④Captions (click or press → to advance)
- ⑤Navigate scenes; click the current number for the script
- ⑥Ask at any time
- ⑦Pause / resume (Space)
- ⑧Settings: voice, tone, speed, playback, captions
- The lesson title has an AI-generated notice ①; replays carry "(replay)". The connection dot indicates online, ended, or reconnecting status.
- Derivations ② contain formulas and key points; figures ③ show geometry, functions, or motion. In narrow windows, figures move above the derivations. Less important work may collapse when the board fills; go back a scene to see it.
- Captions ④ show the tutor's narration sentence by sentence. Your questions and answers appear in light blue. Click a caption or press → to advance.
- Click the current scene number ⑤ to open the list of seen scenes, including "◀ Previous scene" and "Next scene ▶".
- The raised-hand icon ⑥ opens "Ask the tutor".
- The central "Play" / "Pause" button ⑦ controls playback and appears when you move the pointer over the board.
- The "Settings" gear ⑧ groups playback and audio, display, and course controls. The script sidebar toggle is here too.
- Under "Course controls" in settings, return to the tutor page, end a lesson, report it, or download it. The header also has a fullscreen button; Esc exits fullscreen.
After the main explanation, "End of lesson" offers "↺ Replay from the start" and "☰ Lessons".
Playback, going back, and shortcuts
Open the "Settings" gear to adjust playback:
- "🔊 Voice" is on by default, with "Playback" set to "Manual". Each spoken sentence stops at its caption; click the caption or press → to continue. After the last sentence, advance to the next scene.
- With voice on, choose "Auto" for continuous narration. The next scene starts after the narration and animation finish. Playback waits for your answer, an open question box, or an error to be resolved.
- With voice off or unavailable, advance manually. With captions off but voice on, → still advances sentence by sentence.
- During a live lesson, choose "Female" or "Male" under "Tone". If audio already exists, changing voices asks for confirmation and may use Thought Points to generate it again. Replays keep the original voice, which cannot be changed. Filling in missing audio is new AI generation and requires available Thought Points. "Speed" offers 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×, 1.5×, and 2×.
- If the browser blocks audio, click "🔊 Click to turn on the tutor's voice". You can still follow captions when voice is unavailable or synthesis fails or times out.
| What you want to do | How |
|---|---|
| Pause / resume voice, animation, and automatic advance | Space, or the central Play / Pause button |
| Next sentence, then next scene after the last sentence | Click the caption or press →; this also resumes playback |
| Previous sentence, then previous scene at the start | ← |
| Next / previous whole scene | Open the scene list and choose "Next scene ▶" / "◀ Previous scene" |
| Toggle captions | C, or "Captions (C)" in settings |
| Open the list of scenes already seen | Click the current scene number |
| Toggle the "Script sidebar" | T |
| Close the scene list / leave a Q&A review | Esc; closes the list first if it is open |
- The scene list and script sidebar contain only scenes you have seen. Click an ordinary entry to jump there. Answered questions in the scene list open their Q&A, or use "Go to the question" to return to the question. In the sidebar, use the review button below a question.
- Opening the scene list temporarily pauses playback; closing restores its previous state. Pausing affects this page only. The tutor may keep preparing content, which waits until you resume.
- Blackboard shortcuts do not act inside inputs, editable areas, or dialogs. Voice, tone, speed, playback, caption, and sidebar preferences are saved in this browser.
- Going back through existing board content does not call the tutor. When you catch up, captions show "✍ The tutor is writing…" and elapsed seconds. New content appears when ready, or waits if you are paused.
See what the tutor is thinking while you wait
- Before the first board content of a lesson or Q&A, a "The tutor is thinking…" window may appear in the centre.
- When waiting for another scene with work already on the board, the latest thinking line appears below the caption. Click the caption to expand or collapse a window of about 10 lines.
- A temporary waiting message appears even with captions off. Thinking is a draft and is not saved. If none is available, only the preparing or writing message appears.
Ask questions and use the Q&A board
- Stop at the scene you did not understand and click "🙋 Ask". Playback pauses immediately.
- The box identifies the item you are asking about. Type your question and click "Send", or send it empty to say you did not follow. Cancelling leaves playback paused; resume when ready.
- The tutor copies that board onto a Q&A board and explains your question. You can ask follow-ups. With nested Q&A, use "↩ Back one level" to go up one level or "⤺ Back to the board" to return to the main lesson.
- When the explanation ends, click "↩ Go back and continue". At your original question, the Q&A entry lets you review it again. You can also enter from the scene list or script sidebar.
- ①Header path (Review: …)
- ②🙋 You asked
- ③Additional work on the Q&A board
- ④⤺ Back to the board
The header path ① indicates review mode. Hover over or click it to see the full question under "🙋 You asked" ②. The Q&A board ③ retains the work for that question. In an ended lesson, click the scene number to open navigation, then "⤺ Back to the board" ④ to return to the main lesson. Nested Q&A also offers "↩ Back one level", or press Esc to go up one level. While reviewing earlier Q&A in a live lesson, navigation shows "↩ Exit review".
- Questions are limited to 8,000 characters and typed input; there is no voice input. Use "Send" in the question box. Ctrl/⌘+Enter is the shortcut for answering the tutor, described next.
- You can go back to an earlier scene to ask. You cannot ask a new question while reviewing closed Q&A; exit review first.
Answer the tutor
- At the last sentence of a tutor question, the "Answer the tutor (⌘/Ctrl+Enter to send)" box appears with "Answer" and "Skip". With captions off, it sits at the bottom of the board.
- Type your answer, then press Ctrl+Enter (or ⌘+Enter on Mac) or click "Answer". Enter alone adds a line break.
- Your answer appears in light blue in the current level. The tutor continues without opening a separate Q&A board.
Answers must be nonempty and at most 8,000 characters. Choose "Skip" if you do not know. You cannot simply advance while the tutor waits for an answer. Replays have no answer box.
End, leave, and replay a lesson
- End now: click "End lesson", then confirm with "End lesson" in "End this lesson?". The saved board remains available to browse. To follow up, reopen its replay from the lesson list.
- Step away: when using "← Back" or leaving the page, choose "Stay", "Leave for now", or "End lesson and leave". Closing or refreshing the tab may show the browser's own confirmation.
- Unattended lessons: if no page returns for about ten minutes, the tutor ends the lesson automatically. A busy site may end it sooner. Saved content remains available for replay.
- Replay: click a title under "Past lessons". Browsing boards, scripts, and Q&A online and playing cached audio incur no new AI charges. Newly synthesized narration requires Thought Points; see Thought Points and paused lessons.
- Ask or continue: sending a question through "🙋 Ask" reopens the lesson. Unfinished lessons also offer "Finish the lesson". Every new AI call checks Thought Points again. If another lesson is running, use "Go to that lesson" to deal with it first, then return.
- Delete a past lesson: click its "Delete" button under "Past lessons" and confirm. This permanently deletes the lesson and explanation records; Thought Points already spent are not refunded.
Only you can view your lessons. AI lesson exports and account-data exports containing lesson records both require membership; points alone do not unlock them. Exporting existing content itself uses no points. Deleting your account removes these records; see Export my data and Delete account.
Download for offline replay
Members can choose "Download lesson" under "Course controls" in an ended lesson's settings to save a single HTML file. Open it to replay boards, animations, captions, and existing Q&A without a connection. The copy cannot accept questions or continue teaching. Its interface keeps the language used when downloading; the lesson text and original voice stay unchanged.
Creating the file requires a connection. Exporting existing content uses no Thought Points. Separately filling in missing audio generates it in the original voice, requires available Thought Points, and charges according to actual usage. If points are insufficient, new synthesis pauses while existing content and progress are kept; add points and continue manually. You can cancel while it is being prepared. File size and content types are limited; missing images or audio are indicated, and captions remain readable. JavaScript must be enabled in the browser.
Thought Points and paused lessons
Lessons follow the same Thought Point rules as other AI features: available points are checked before each call, and actual usage is settled afterward. The whole lesson is not charged in advance, and unlimited generation with an insufficient balance is not promised.
- If points run short during a lesson, new generation pauses. Completed boards, text, and cached audio remain available to review online.
- If new speech synthesis is needed but points are insufficient, existing text is kept; the whole lesson is not marked as failed.
- After topping up, return to the original lesson and continue manually from the unfinished part. Topping up alone does not automatically resume paid calls. See Continue a task after running out of points.
- Reviewing existing content incurs no new AI charges. Follow-up questions, finishing a lesson, and generating new audio require points. Export and offline use still require membership.
- Actual charges for a call already started may create a negative balance. All incoming points, including top-ups, membership grants, and compensation, first offset previous points owed under the same rules. New calls are still checked; you cannot keep overdrawing.
Errors and retries
- Wait during automatic retries. If they fail, click "⟳ Retry" below the caption, or the central retry button on an empty board.
- The page reconnects after a connection loss. If it stays stuck, click the caption or "Next scene ▶" to check the connection.
- If saving the lesson record fails, refresh and continue from the saved position.
- "Speech synthesis timed out" or "Speech synthesis failed" affects audio only. Continue with captions or turn voice off in settings.
Collaboration and sharing
Whether classmates are organizing a course together or a teacher is distributing lecture notes, the process is the same: put people in a group, then grant that group access to a space. Each member can view or edit all the space's content according to their role.
Remember three things:
- The smallest unit you can share is an entire space, not a single chapter.
- Space access can be granted only to groups, not directly to individuals.
- People join a group through a join link that they open themselves.
Roles and permissions
Your role determines whether you can only view a space, edit it, or manage other people's access.
From lowest to highest, the roles are "Viewer", "Editor", "Admin", and "Owner":
| Action | Viewer | Editor | Admin | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| View content, favorite it to your own space, and use it in study plans | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Enter edit mode; create, rename, and move chapters; create, edit, and delete blocks | – | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Delete chapters | – | Only chapters you created | ✓ | ✓ |
| Space settings: change name and description | – | – | ✓ | ✓ |
| Space settings › Permissions: grant group access, change roles, remove access | – | – | Only Editor and Viewer grants | ✓ |
| Delete the space | – | – | – | ✓ |
Your effective role in a space is calculated as follows:
- Take the lower of your role in the group and the role granted to that group in the space.
- If several groups give you access to the same space, take the highest resulting role.
For example, a space called "Year 10 Physics · Mechanics" grants access to two groups: its owning group, "Physics Study Group" (Owner), and "Year 10 Class 3" (Viewer). Xiaohong is an Editor in Physics Study Group, so she can edit the mechanics space. Ahua is only a Viewer in that group, so he can only view the space. Everyone in Year 10 Class 3 can only view through that group, regardless of their role in the class group. Anyone also in Physics Study Group gets the higher of the two resulting roles.
Other rules:
- As an Editor or higher, you can delete chapters you created. This privilege ends if you become a Viewer or lose access.
- All logged-in users can view the public space. Site admins maintain it; everyone else can only view.
- You are the only member of your personal space. Others cannot see it unless you grant a group access.
Groups
A group is a membership list. Create it once, then share any space with those people by granting access to the group.
- ①Join link (copy and send to classmates)
- ②Approval and expiry
- ③Pending requests: choose a role, then Approve
- ④Member list and roles
Create a group
- Click "Account" in the header and select "Groups" on the left.
- Click "Create group" (or "Create your first group" if you have none).
- Enter "Group name" and "Group ID", then click "Create".
- Group name: 1–100 characters. You can change it later using the gear on the right of the group row (available only to group admins and owners).
- Group ID: 2–50 characters, using lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. It appears in the group's space URLs. It cannot be changed after creation.
- An English group name automatically fills in the ID. For a Chinese name, enter an ID yourself, such as
physics-group. - Group IDs and all usernames share one namespace. An existing username cannot be used as a group ID; the error is "This Group ID already exists".
- Anyone can create a group; membership is not required. Its creator becomes its "Owner".
- Your automatically created personal group does not appear here and cannot be used to invite others.
Invite through a join link
You cannot directly add people by email or username. Generate a join link and send it to them; they open it to join.
For the sender (a group admin or owner):
- On "My groups", click a group's row to open its member manager.
- Under "Join link", click "Generate link", then "Copy" (①), and send the link to your classmates.
- Adjust the two settings below as needed (②):
- "Joining requires approval": checked by default. With approval enabled, recipients submit requests for you to approve. Without it, clicking "Join" adds them immediately.
- "Valid for": choose "7 days", "30 days", or "Forever". The default is 30 days, counted from the moment you select it.
For the recipient:
- Open the link. If logged out, you see "You received a group join link". Click "Log in" or "Create an account"; afterward, you return here automatically.
- The page shows the group name, member count, shared-space count, and that your role on joining will be Viewer (read-only).
- Click "Request to join" if approval is required, or "Join" otherwise.
- After requesting, you see "Requested; waiting for an admin to approve". You can still "Withdraw request".
- Once you join, "Spaces shared with the group" lists the spaces you can open. They also appear in the space switcher on the left.
- "Reset link" invalidates the old link immediately. Use it if the link has been forwarded somewhere it should not be.
- An expired or reset link shows "This link no longer works". Send a new link.
- A rejected applicant cannot reapply to the same group for 24 hours.
- Each person can have at most 20 pending requests at once.
Approve requests and manage members
When requests arrive, a red count appears beside "Groups" in Account's left sidebar, and the group row shows its pending count.
- Click the group row to open member management.
- In the pending-requests list, use each row's dropdown to choose the role the person will receive (Viewer by default), then click "Approve" or "Reject" (③).
- In the member list (④), click a person's role to change it, or the red trash icon on the right to remove them.
- Except for owners, you can change or remove only members with a lower role than yours, and assign only lower roles. Owners can manage anyone.
- You cannot change your own role.
- Group Editors and Viewers can view the member list but cannot see join links or pending requests.
- To leave, click "Leave group" on your own member row. All access obtained through the group ends immediately.
- The sole owner cannot leave. The message is "You are the only owner of this Group. Make another member an owner or delete the Group first".
- Only an owner can delete a group. Click the trash icon on its row, then "Delete". Deletion is blocked if the group still owns spaces or has access grants to other spaces, with "This Group still owns Spaces and cannot be deleted". Delete its owned spaces first, and have the admins or owners of other spaces remove its access grants, then delete the group.
Share a space with a group
Once you grant a group access, every member can find the space in their switcher and view or edit according to their role.
- ①Permissions
- ②Add group
- ③Groups with access and their roles
- On any content page, click the space switcher at the top of the left sidebar.
- Under "Space", click the "Space settings" gear on the right of the space to share.
- Open the "Permissions" tab (①).
- Click "Add group" (②). Under "Choose a group", select a group (you can search by name), choose a "Role", then click "Add".
- The group appears in the list of groups with access (③). Change its role or remove access whenever needed.
- Only space admins and owners see the gear.
- "Choose a group" lists only groups where you are an admin or owner and which have not already been granted access.
- You can grant only roles lower than your own; owners can choose any role.
- Common errors: "You do not have permission to share", "You cannot grant a role equal to or higher than your own", "You must be an administrator of this Group to grant it access", and "This Group already has access to this Space".
Want to share with just one classmate? There is no direct method yet. Use these four steps:
- Create a group, such as "Physics Help", in "My groups".
- Generate a join link and send it to your classmate.
- Approve their pending request.
- In the space's "Space settings › Permissions", grant access to Physics Help.
Create and delete spaces
Give each course or project its own space for a clearer outline and to share only that course's material.
- Click the space switcher at the top left, then "Create space" at the bottom of the dropdown.
- "Owner group": choose the group that will own it.
- "Space ID (URL)": enter an English identifier, such as
physics-notes, for the URL. - "Space name": enter a recognizable name, such as "Year 10 Physics · Mechanics".
- "Description (optional)": leave it blank if you like. Click "Create".
- "Owner group" lists only groups where you are an admin or owner; your personal group is excluded. You must create a group first to create another space. With no eligible groups, you see "You need to create a group first, or become an admin of a group".
- Space IDs allow only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, starting with a letter or number. They must be unique within the group. Reserved system words such as
publicanddefaultcannot be used. - A Chinese space name does not generate an ID automatically; enter one yourself.
- The URL is
/s/群组 ID/空间标识. - Space counts are limited, and your personal space counts too. See Capacity limits.
- "Create space" is hidden in offline mode.
To change the name or description, edit them in "Space settings › General" and click "Save changes".
To delete a space:
- Move or delete all chapters first. If nodes remain, a message gives their count and asks you to move or delete them.
- Open "Space settings › General". Under "Danger zone" at the bottom, click "Delete space", then "Delete".
Working together
These rules are easy to overlook in a shared space:
- Only you can see your private notes, even in shared spaces. See Private notes.
- Viewers cannot write in someone else's space, including private notes. To annotate their content, favorite it to your own space first. See Favorites.
- If two people edit the same block, the last save overwrites the earlier one, without a warning. Split work by chapter where possible. See Saving, undo, and simultaneous editing.
- If you are removed from a group, or its space access is revoked, you immediately lose access to that space.
- Chapters and blocks you create in other people's spaces count toward your own allowance. See Capacity limits.
- If you are the sole owner of a group with other members, make someone else an owner before deleting your account. See Delete your account.
Offline use and devices
You can still read your notes on the subway, when the dorm internet is down, or where reception is poor. Offline features are a membership benefit. Web offline mode is currently view-only; the app keeps its existing ability to edit offline and store study records locally for later sync. Any future web offline editing will also be a membership benefit.
Web offline mode
Download the spaces you need into your browser before you leave, then read them without a connection. Web offline mode is view-only: you cannot edit notes or study material in a study plan until you go online again.
- ①Choose spaces
- ②Download attachments
- ③Check the estimate, then Start download
Go offline
- On a content or study plan page, click the "Online" button with a Wi-Fi icon on the right of the header.
- In "Enter offline mode", select at least one space under "Choose spaces" (①).
- "Download attachments" is checked by default (②), including images and other files. Uncheck it if you only need text or want to save storage.
- Check the estimated storage needed (③), then click "Start download".
- During download, the page says "Keep this page open while downloading; it may take a few minutes...". Leave it open until you see "Download complete".
- If you click "Online" while editing a block, you see "Offline mode is view-only: exit edit mode first (what you are editing is saved), then go offline". Click the pencil to leave edit mode, then click "Online" again.
- After download, the header button becomes orange and says "Offline".
- From then on, the site shows your downloaded copy, even if you have a connection. You will not see other people's online changes until you go online again.
- The package includes each selected space's home page and chapter pages. AI chat pages and Account are not included.
- To view "My favorites" offline, include your personal space in the download.
- If you select too much, a message explains that the offline package is too large to generate at once and asks you to choose fewer spaces or exclude attachments. This refers to the "Download attachments" checkbox.
- Only one offline package can be generated at a time. If the previous download has not finished, you are asked to wait for it before trying again.
What works offline
Offline, you can:
- Read every chapter and block in downloaded spaces.
- View downloaded favorites; the stars on blocks still show whether they are favorites.
Offline, you cannot:
- Edit notes: create, rename, move, or delete chapters; create, edit, delete, or reorder blocks; or edit a mind map. In spaces you can normally edit, the header pencil is greyed out with the tooltip "Offline mode is view-only".
- Add or remove favorites: stars are disabled with the same "Offline mode is view-only" tooltip.
- Use study plans: study, review, and random quizzes are unavailable. The study plan page shows "Study plans aren't available in offline mode". Go online to study. For the limits of view-only offline use and the mobile app, see App offline use and sync.
- Use any AI feature: AI chat, AI solving, the AI Tutor, or Smart Import.
- Export PDF / Word / Markdown or quiz papers.
- Create spaces, change space settings, or manage groups.
Opening a page outside the package shows "This page is not in your offline package". Click "Go back".
If you lose your connection without entering offline mode, opening an uncached page shows "You seem to be offline". The page refreshes automatically when you reconnect. During a site update, you may briefly see "Votion is updating"; it usually recovers in a minute or two and automatically refreshes to the original page.
Go online and sync
Once you have a connection again, manually switch the site back online.
- Click the orange "Offline" button in the header to open "Manage offline mode".
- Click "Sync and go online".
- When you see "Sync complete" and "You're back online", you are online again. The offline package is cleared too; download it again before your next outing.
- Offline mode is view-only and creates no new edits, so "Changes to sync" under "Sync & status" is normally 0.
- A nonzero count means edits remain from an older offline session. This count also appears beside "Offline" in the header. "Sync and go online" uploads them, checking your current permissions for each item. If your content allowance is insufficient, sync stops and explains why. Unuploaded edits remain saved; resolve the limit and try again. See Capacity limits.
- If sync reports N conflicts and asks you to resolve them, someone has edited or deleted the same content online. Click "Resolve conflicts". Each conflict shows "Local version" (your offline edit) beside "Remote version" (the current online content). Choose one, or click "Edit" to merge them yourself. Before submitting, copy any local text you want to keep somewhere safe.
Two other actions in "Manage offline mode" cannot be undone:
- "Discard changes": drops unsynced edits and returns online immediately.
- "Clear all offline data" under "Storage": clears local offline data and leaves offline mode without syncing any edits. To free storage only, use "Clear all attachments" beside it.
Logging out while offline: logging out clears this browser's offline data. If unsynced edits remain, "Log out" first shows their count:
- With a connection, "Sync first, then log out" uses the sync process above (resolve conflicts first), then logs out automatically once everything is uploaded. Failed sync prevents logout and preserves the edits.
- "Discard changes and log out" permanently loses those edits.
- Without a connection, you can neither sync nor complete logout. Your edits stay in this browser until you reconnect.
Install on your desktop (PWA)
Installing the PWA and using it online are free. Install Votion as an icon on your desktop or home screen. It opens like a standalone app, without the browser's address bar and tabs.
- On a computer, open Votion in Chrome or Edge. Click the install icon on the right of the address bar, or find the install option in the browser menu.
- On a phone, open Votion in a browser and choose its add-to-home-screen option.
- The website has no install button. Installation is provided by the browser, and wording varies.
- The installed version is still the website. To use it without a connection, download content first as described in Go offline.
Mobile app
Read notes, review on a schedule, import lecture notes with your camera, and chat with AI on your phone. Log in with the same account to use the same content and study progress as the website.
The current version supports Simplified Chinese, English, Traditional Chinese (Taiwan), and Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong). Switch in "Settings › Language". On first launch, the app uses your system language; after login, it uses the language saved to your account. Changes take effect immediately and are saved. If an older version has no "Language" option or does not include the language you want, update the app first.
Download and update
Currently, only Android is supported.
- Open the website on a computer and click "Get the app" in the header (after login, it is in the avatar menu at the top right). This page is available without login.
- Scan the page's QR code with your phone to download the installer directly, or open the page in your phone browser and click "Download for Android".
- Open the downloaded APK to install it. If Android warns about unknown sources, follow "Installation" on the page to allow installation in your phone settings.
- Open the app and log in with your web account. If you do not have an account, use the registration link on the login page.
Updating: if the app displays a full-screen message saying your version is no longer supported and you must update, tap its download-latest-version button and install the new version to continue.
What the app can do
The app has four bottom tabs for spaces, studying, AI, and settings. It is suited to reading, reviewing, and importing on the go. Use the website for setup tasks such as creating spaces and plans or adjusting layout.
| Feature | Website | Mobile app |
|---|---|---|
| Browse spaces and notes | ✓ | ✓ Each space card shows your role |
| Edit chapters and blocks | ✓ | ✓ Tap the top-right pencil to enter edit mode (only shown if you can edit the space); long-press a chapter or block for its menu. New blocks can only be Markdown, problems, or notes. Uploading images, drawing, and editing interactive diagrams are unavailable. Save when finished |
| Study and review | ✓ | ✓ See Offline and mobile study |
| Create study plans | ✓ | ✗ Only existing plans can be studied |
| Create spaces, space settings, groups, join links | ✓ | ✗ |
| Favorites | ✓ | Can view existing favorites, but cannot add any |
| Mind maps, search, export | ✓ | ✗ |
| AI chat | ✓ | ✓ See AI chat on mobile |
| Smart Import | ✓ | ✓ Take photos, choose images or PDFs, or record audio; see Import in the mobile app |
| AI solving, AI Tutor | ✓ | ✗ |
| Review reminders | ✗ | ✓ See Due reminders |
| Offline use | Membership required; download a package to read notes, with no offline editing or studying | Membership required; edit offline and store study records locally, then sync online. Starting a new study session still requires a connection; see App offline use and sync |
| Help Center, export my data, change password | ✓ | Opens the website |
- Long-press a chapter (or a block in edit mode), then choose the AI-chat action to ask AI about that content.
- Settings is grouped, from top to bottom, into membership and usage, study reminders, data and sync, speech, help and feedback, and privacy and legal information. Logout and a small red account-deletion action are at the bottom.
Speech recognition: in settings, open speech recognition to choose among three methods:
- Native recognition: uses your phone's system recognizer. Free; requires Google services on the phone.
- Online recognition: high-accuracy recognition requiring a connection. Consumes Thought Points; membership is not required.
- Offline recognition: a membership offline benefit that works entirely offline after downloading a model. Download the recognition model before first use.
App offline use and sync
The app works differently from the website: you can edit downloaded content and store records from an already-open study session locally for later sync. Starting a new study session still requires a connection to fetch content. The new policy adds a membership requirement to these existing offline features; it does not make the app view-only. Download content first, enable the offline-mode switch when needed, then turn it off after reconnecting. Only then does sync happen.
- While online, open offline storage and cache in settings, then the offline-content manager.
- On the offline-download page, select at least one space and optionally study plans, then download the selected content.
- Downloads appear in the downloaded-content list. Items with new online changes are marked as having updates; delete downloads you no longer need.
- To work offline, open data sync in settings and enable offline mode. Study records and edits stay on the phone without automatic upload. The pending-record count shows how many are waiting.
- Once connected again, turn off offline mode in data-sync settings. If records are waiting, the app asks for confirmation. Confirm sync and wait for the completion message.
- Turning off offline mode requires a connection. Without one, the app says it cannot leave offline mode.
- If sync fails partway through, such as during an unstable connection, uploaded records are not uploaded again. Pending records remain on the phone and offline mode stays enabled. Try turning it off again later; sync resumes from the first unuploaded record.
- If the server rejects an edit, for example because you no longer have edit access to that space, the app explains which edit failed and why. It also lists content you created beneath that item offline that must wait for its parent to upload. Choose to postpone sync to keep all edits on the phone, or discard the N listed items to stop uploading them permanently and continue with the others. The same applies when syncing before logout.
- If you log out with pending records, the app shows their count. With a connection, you can sync first and then log out. Choosing to discard and log out permanently loses those records.
- The app has no web-style conflict selection screen. If you and someone else edit the same content, the last submitted change wins. Avoid editing blocks others are working on while you are offline.
- The app also automatically caches some content you have viewed. Clearing the cache in offline-storage settings removes only automatic caches, not content you deliberately downloaded.
- For enabling review reminders and their frequency, see Due reminders.
Membership expiry does not delete existing local material or unsynced edits. Do not log out, uninstall, or clear local data before confirming sync has succeeded. Online sync still checks content permissions and capacity. Offline copies do not count again toward cloud capacity.
Membership and Thought Points
Taking notes, organizing your knowledge base, and studying and reviewing online are free. Membership provides more capacity, all export and offline features, and monthly Thought Point grants. AI uses Thought Points based on actual usage; membership is not required.
Free and member comparison
| Benefit | Free user | Paid member |
|---|---|---|
| Online notes, search, favorites, collaboration, study, and review | Available, subject to permissions and capacity | Available, subject to permissions and capacity |
| All export formats, including personal-data ZIPs and AI lessons | Unavailable | Available |
| Offline features | Unavailable | Available; web is view-only, while the app retains offline editing and local storage of study records |
| AI use | Available with sufficient Thought Points | Available with sufficient Thought Points |
| Grant each membership month | None | 1,000 points, valid for that membership month |
| File storage | 200 MiB | 5 GiB |
| Spaces you own | 3 | 20 |
| Nodes (chapters) | 1,000 | 10,000 |
| Content blocks | 10,000 | 100,000 |
| Text and structured content | 100 MiB | 2 GiB |
- Monthly billing is CNY 19.90/month; annual billing is CNY 168/year, with the same benefits. Annual billing averages CNY 14 per month and saves CNY 70.80 compared with twelve monthly payments.
- The personal space created at registration occupies one owned-space slot. Access to other people's spaces still depends on permissions; content you create there counts toward your corresponding usage.
- Non-members can buy points separately to use AI. Points without membership do not unlock AI lesson exports, other exports, or offline features.
- Members do not spend Thought Points to export existing content. A separate AI request to generate or rewrite content before export still consumes points. Reviewing existing AI content and playing cached audio do not incur new AI charges.
- AI Tutor access, membership, and Thought Points are checked independently. Paying does not automatically grant access; see Who can use it.
- Installing the PWA and accessing Votion online do not require membership.
Existing accounts when the new policy launches
At launch, there will be a one-time transition: all existing memberships will become free accounts, and new Thought Point accounts will start at 0. Old membership time will not carry over, and old daily/monthly quota or quota packs will not convert into new points. The transition date will be announced in advance; it has not happened yet.
Notes, study records, and other existing content will remain. Content above free capacity will restrict new additions under Storage and content limits, without automatic deletion. Existing permission roles, such as administrator, will not change because of this membership transition.
This is a one-time transition from the old system. Memberships purchased and points credited after launch will not be cleared again. Purchased points and permanent compensation points continue to be retained under the normal rules when membership expires or renewal fails.
Membership status and usage
The new membership and usage page will show your plan, paid-period end time, renewal status, Thought Point balance, current monthly grant expiry, and storage and content usage. Spending details will show actual point charges and the associated tasks and models for checking your usage. Backend model prices and price multipliers are not shown, nor are estimated consumption or internal reservations shown before a call.
Membership benefits or points are added only after successful payment. If the result is not yet confirmed, check the order status instead of paying repeatedly.
AI Thought Points
Top-up rate: CNY 1 = 100 Thought Points. The initial release offers four amounts:
| Payment | Thought Points credited |
|---|---|
| CNY 20 | 2,000 |
| CNY 50 | 5,000 |
| CNY 100 | 10,000 |
| CNY 200 | 20,000 |
Purchased points never expire. There are no top-up discounts, extra bonus points, or automatic top-ups.
Membership grants: both monthly and annual members receive 1,000 points each membership month, based on their activation date rather than the first day of the calendar month. Annual membership grants arrive in 12 installments, not all at once. Each grant expires at the end of its membership month and does not accumulate. Expiring membership grants are used first, then permanent compensation points, then purchased points. Within each non-expiring category, earlier credits are used first. Cancelling annual renewal does not stop grants for the remaining months already covered by the annual payment.
Point charges: AI chat, Smart Import, solving, the AI Tutor, paid speech transcription, and speech synthesis share one point account and charge according to actual usage. The same rules apply to members and non-members, and to granted and purchased points. Selecting Flash / Pro and starting or continuing a task requests that AI capability. You can check actual charges afterward without needing to understand backend model prices or confirm backend price changes.
Before each call, the system checks and temporarily reserves some points. Afterward, it deducts the actual charge and releases the unused reservation. Actual usage above the reservation may create a negative balance. If point charges remain unpaid, all incoming points, including top-ups, membership grants, and compensation, first offset the amount owed under the same rules. Only the remainder can fund new calls. A negative balance is not credit for starting further calls. The old daily/monthly token quota pools will not return, and deleting content does not refund Thought Points already spent.
Cancelling an AI call that has already started still incurs charges for actual, verifiable usage. The platform bears costs caused by platform failures and extra costs from its automatic retries. Usage without reliable evidence is not guessed from character counts and charged.
For model tiers and spending records, see AI Thought Points and Flash / Pro.
Storage and content limits
Capacity measures what you currently store, not a monthly upload allowance. Files, nodes, blocks, and text and structured content are counted separately; saved AI chats, lesson text, and audio also count toward their corresponding categories. Reusing references to the same file does not count it twice. Deletion reduces usage only when the file is actually released and no other content still references it.
Content remains after membership expires and can still be viewed, deleted, or reduced online. Categories exceeding free limits cannot grow. If usage is still over the limit after a deletion, the restriction remains until usage is below the limit with space available. The amount just deleted is not an allowance to add that much again. Exceeding one category does not block normal operations in other categories still within their limits.
AI tasks check known capacity requirements before starting. If insufficient capacity is discovered only after results return, generated results and progress are preserved. Free capacity or activate membership, then continue manually. The same completed step will not call AI or charge points again.
When usage is blocked
| Message or situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Insufficient Thought Points | Top up and submit the request again; continue multistep tasks from their saved progress as described below |
| Negative Thought Point balance | Top-ups, membership grants, and compensation first offset points owed; continue only when the remaining available points are sufficient |
| Export or offline use requires membership | Activate membership; buying points alone does not unlock these benefits |
| Content or storage limit exceeded | Delete content to actually release capacity, or activate membership for higher limits |
| AI Tutor unavailable | Meet the site's AI Tutor access conditions; membership or top-ups do not replace eligibility |
| Too many requests or the site is busy | Try again later; a point balance does not override resource or concurrency limits |
Continue a task after running out of points
An import or AI lesson may need several AI calls. If points run short midway, the task pauses and keeps completed results and progress. You do not need to start over.
- Buy Thought Points as prompted. Top-ups, membership grants, compensation, and other incoming points first offset any previous amount owed under the same rules.
- Return to the original task: open imports through "Account › Import tasks", or lessons from the AI Tutor lesson list.
- Click the task's continue action. The system rechecks your balance, capacity, permissions, and task status, then resumes from the unfinished step.
- Successfully completed steps are not generated, charged, or written again.
Topping up does not automatically start paid calls; you must continue manually. Refreshing, logging out, or a service restart does not clear a paused task's progress. Do not delete tasks or materials you still want to continue; doing so may make resuming impossible.
Subscribe and top up
Once the new payment features launch, use the membership and top-up entry on a computer to choose monthly billing, annual billing, or a point amount. Check the order amount and terms before paying. Supported payment methods will be listed on the live payment page.
Membership requires explicit authorization for automatic renewal. Monthly plans renew monthly and annual plans yearly. The page will show the current period's end and next charge information. One charge is attempted when the paid period ends, never in advance and without automatic retries.
- Successful charge: membership continues for the next period, with grants for each corresponding membership month under the same rules.
- Confirmed failed charge: at expiry, the account becomes free while retaining content and purchased points. That subscription stops charging automatically and will not try again in later months or years.
- Payment result awaiting confirmation: the order remains under reconciliation. An unknown result is not treated as failure, and no duplicate charge is made. Wait for the original order's result to avoid paying again.
To restore membership after failure, you must subscribe again, confirm the order, and explicitly authorize renewal. The new membership period begins when the successful new payment takes effect and provides a full month or year. Future renewals follow the new period, with no charge for the interruption. Buying Thought Points alone only adds points; it does not reactivate membership or automatic billing.
Switching monthly/annual billing: the current paid period stays unchanged. Your selected plan begins with the next period. There is no price adjustment, refund, or reissue of grants for the current period. The next period still uses one charge attempt at expiry: success activates it, while confirmed failure returns the account to the free tier.
Cancelling renewal: you can stop the next renewal and continue using benefits until the current paid period ends once cancellation succeeds. Ordinary cancellation of an annual plan does not refund unused months. If the payment channel has not confirmed cancellation, it remains in progress; check the final result.
Refunds and service compensation
Ordinary Thought Point top-ups are non-refundable once completed, including unused points. Choose an amount that fits your needs; purchased points never expire.
Point compensation applies only to the following cases with a verifiable number of points owed. Membership time is not extended, and no separate discretionary refund for service problems is provided:
- Incorrect or duplicate point charges.
- Points that should have been granted but were not.
- Serious service failures that demonstrably leave points owed, such as charged results that cannot be delivered or recovered because of the platform.
The total restored for the same original loss is 1.5 times the points owed: 100% of the loss plus an extra 50%. For a verified loss of 100 points, the total is 150. If 100 points have already been effectively reversed or reissued, only another 50 are added; restoring the original points does not entitle you to another 150. Effective reversals and reissues for the same loss count toward this total. Repeated requests do not receive repeated compensation, and late fulfillment is checked alongside compensation to avoid restoring the same loss twice. Points restored earlier but left unusable because they expired do not count as effective restoration; permanent points must make up that amount. Restored points already used are not reissued again.
Ordinary errors, waiting, or help from staff do not receive goodwill points. An extended interruption to membership benefits is not arbitrarily converted to points; without a verified point shortfall, this compensation does not apply. There are no fixed compensation tiers. All restored points are permanent, including the original loss and extra 50%, even if the original loss involved membership grants that have since expired. Normal monthly membership grants still expire at the end of their membership month. Granted points cannot be redeemed for cash.
Legally required refunds, corrections of unauthorized, duplicate, or erroneous payments, and payment-channel disputes are handled under applicable law and channel rules. Granted points cannot be imposed in place of required monetary corrections. Contact support@orzsai.com with your account and relevant order details in these cases.
Ordinary membership cancellation stops only the next renewal and does not refund the current period. Service failures follow the point-compensation rules, while the legal-refund and payment-correction boundaries above still apply. Self-service product exports are a membership benefit, but your legal right to access or obtain a copy of personal information is not restricted by membership status. Submit such requests to the email address above.
Account and privacy
This chapter covers registration, login, password changes and recovery, feedback, taking your data with you, and deleting your account. It also explains where your data is stored and what AI can see.
Registration and email verification
Register with an email address, verify it, and start taking notes and scheduling reviews.
- Click "Sign up" at the top right, or "Create an account" on the login page, to open "Create your account".
- Enter "Username", "Email address", and "Password", plus "Invitation code" if required. See Sign up and log in for field requirements.
- Check both consent boxes: "I am at least 14 years old and have read and agree to Terms of Service and Privacy Policy" and "I consent to the transfer of my personal information overseas (Google Cloud) for storage and processing (Cross-border Personal Information Transfer Notice)". Both are required to enable "Sign up". Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and the transfer notice are links that open in new tabs; read them first if needed.
- Click "Sign up" to open "Verify your email".
- Find the email with a 6-digit code, enter it under "Verification code", and click "Verify".
- Verification logs you in automatically. If you registered through a classmate's group join link, you return to that page to finish joining.
Verification-code rules:
- Valid for 10 minutes.
- If no email arrives, "Resend code" becomes available after 60 seconds. During cooldown, the button shows a countdown such as 60s.
- After 5 incorrect attempts with the same code, request a new one.
- An account left unverified for 7 days after registration is deleted automatically. You can then register again with the same email and username.
Possible registration messages:
| Message | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "This email is already registered." | The email belongs to an already verified account | Log in; for a forgotten password, see Login and password recovery |
| "The username or email is already taken. Please use another." | Someone already uses the username | Choose another username |
| A message that xxx is reserved | You used a reserved name such as admin, help, or votion | Choose another username |
| "The password does not meet the requirements." | Fewer than 8 characters, or missing letters or numbers | Use a password meeting the requirements |
| "An invitation code is required." / "The invitation code is invalid, disabled, expired, or exhausted." | A code is required, or yours cannot be used | Check with the person who gave you the code |
| "Registration with this email domain is not supported. Please use your regular email address." | You used a disposable email service | Use your regular email |
| "Too many registrations from this network. Please try again later." / "You are sending too frequently. Please try again later." | Too many recent requests from the same network or email | Wait and retry. Shared school or dorm networks can encounter this |
- Username format is checked as you type. Invalid input shows an explanation below; valid input shows "Username looks good".
- Email addresses are case-insensitive.
Mobile app: use the registration link on its login page to create an account; the required information is the same as on the website.
Login and password recovery
Log in with email and password. If you forget your password, reset it through your email.
- Click "Log in" at the top right to open "Log in to your account".
- Enter "Email address" and "Password", then click "Log in".
- You return to the page you were trying to visit, or to the public space if there was none.
- Unverified accounts are sent to email verification first.
- After a long period of inactivity, you need to log in again.
- "Log out" in the avatar menu signs out only this device. To sign out other devices too, see Password changes and signing out devices.
Possible login messages:
- "Incorrect email or password.": the email is unregistered or the password is wrong.
- "Too many attempts. Try again in N minutes.": too many wrong passwords for this email triggered a temporary lock. Even the correct password cannot log in during the lock; already logged-in devices are unaffected. To regain access immediately, reset your password as described below; a successful reset unlocks the account.
- "Too many requests. Please try again later.": wait before trying again.
- "Your account has been disabled. Please contact an administrator.": an admin disabled the account.
- During an account-deletion cooling-off period, a yellow box asks whether to cancel deletion; see Delete your account.
Password recovery
- Click "Forgot password?" on the login page to open "Reset your password".
- Enter the registered "Email address" and click "Send reset email".
- The page says "If this email is registered, you'll receive a reset email. Open the link in it within 30 minutes to finish resetting your password."
- Follow the email link to "Set a new password". Enter "New password" and "Confirm new password", then click "Reset password". Hints show any missing requirement as you type: at least 8 characters, one letter, and one number.
- Back on the login page, you see "Your password has been reset. Log in with your new password." Use the new password.
- Reset links last 30 minutes and work once. An expired or used link shows "This reset link has expired or has already been used. Request a new password reset." Click "Request a new reset →" below.
- Repeated requests for the same email within 60 seconds do not send another message. Check spam and wait before retrying.
- A successful reset invalidates login on all your devices. Log in again with the new password.
- The mobile app's password-recovery link opens the website in a browser to finish the reset.
Confirming updated agreements: after significant changes to the Terms of Service or Privacy Policy, login opens "Please confirm the following to continue". Check the boxes and click "Agree and continue". If you disagree, click "Log out" or follow the account-deletion instructions at the bottom. This dialog cannot simply be dismissed.
Password changes and signing out devices
If you remember the old password, change it in Account. Changing it also signs out all devices.
- Click "Account" in the header, then "Security" on the left. "Change password" opens by default.
- Enter "Current password", "New password", and "Confirm new password". The new password needs at least 8 characters, including letters and numbers.
- Click "Change password".
- You are taken to login with "Your password has been changed. Log in with your new password."
- Every device, including the current one, must log in again with the new password.
- Like logout, a password change clears local offline data on this device. If unsynced edits remain, clicking "Change password" first shows their count. With a connection, "Sync first, then change password" syncs and then continues; "Discard changes and change password" permanently loses them. See Go online and sync.
- Your API tokens also become invalid (admins only; see API tokens).
- Possible errors: "The current password is incorrect." and "The new passwords do not match."
- The app has no password-change screen. Open the account card at the top of settings, then the password-change action under security. It opens the website in a browser; log in there to change it.
Account
Account details, membership, security, groups, and import tasks are all here.
Click "Account" in the header. "Profile" opens by default. The left sidebar has five entries:
| Sidebar entry | Contents |
|---|---|
| "Profile" | Username, email, groups and roles, registration time, and "Invitation code used" if applicable |
| "Membership" | Membership status, Thought Points, storage and content usage; see Membership status and usage |
| "Security" | "Change password", "Export my data", and "Delete account" tabs |
| "Groups" | Create groups, send join links, approve requests, and manage members; see Groups. A red count appears when groups you manage have pending requests |
| "Import tasks" | Smart Import progress and results; see Import tasks |
- Profile fields are read-only. Usernames cannot change after registration; below email it says "Email can't be changed yet".
- The "Groups" list excludes your automatically created personal group.
- Account is designed for computer screens and can feel cramped in a phone browser. Use the app's settings for mobile account management.
Feedback and reports
Tell us about problems, awkward workflows, or features you would like. Use reports for illegal or harmful content.
Send feedback
- Choose "Feedback" in the avatar menu to open a dialog, or click "Feedback" in the footer of pages such as Home and Help Center to open the feedback page.
- Choose a "Type": "Problem", "Suggestion", or "Other".
- Explain in "Message". For a problem, include the page, the action you took, and any message you saw.
- To receive a reply, leave an email or WeChat contact in "Contact (optional)".
- Click "Send feedback" and wait for "Feedback sent. Thank you!".
- The current page, browser, and version information are attached automatically to help us investigate.
- Messages allow at most 2000 characters; contact details allow 200.
- At most 10 submissions per hour. Exceeding this shows a rate-limit message asking you to retry later.
- Logged-out visitors are asked to log in first.
- In the mobile app, open the feedback action under help and feedback in settings. App version and device information are attached automatically.
Report illegal or harmful information
- For a specific item, click its "Report illegal or harmful content" flag, choose a "Reason", add details, and click "Submit report". Flags appear beside AI replies and solutions, in the AI Tutor lesson header, and on space pages where you have view-only access. The reported content is included automatically.
- If there is no flag, open "Report abuse" in the footer of Home, Help Center, or similar pages. Log in and submit a report with the content's page and the problem.
Site announcements
New features and maintenance notices appear as a banner below the header.
- Only one appears at a time; pinned announcements come first.
- Click "×" on the right to dismiss it and show the next one, if any.
- Dismissals are saved only in this browser on this device. Changing computers or browsers, or clearing site data, makes dismissed announcements reappear.
- In the app, announcements appear at the top of the spaces page.
Export your data
Under the new policy, personal-data ZIP export is a membership benefit; having Thought Points alone does not unlock it. You do not need membership to exercise your legal right to access or obtain a copy of your personal information; contact support@orzsai.com.
Download your personal Votion data as a ZIP for backup or use elsewhere.
- Click "Account", then "Security", then "Export my data".
- Click "Start export". The button changes to "Generating…", and "Recent exports" shows "Queued…" or "Generating…".
- Large exports may take a few minutes. You can leave the page while it runs.
- Return and, once the recent export is complete with a file size, click "Download".
The archive includes (README.md inside has the complete list):
- Account information (no password), groups, and roles.
- All notes in your personal space, as readable Markdown and raw data.
- Favorites, study plans and review records, and quiz history.
- AI chats and AI Tutor lesson records: the board content and explanations you saw, and your questions and answers.
- Transactions for membership subscriptions, top-ups, spending, point compensation, legally required refunds or payment corrections, and detailed AI usage.
- Agreement consent records, reports, and feedback you submitted.
- Devices you logged in on, and API token names and usage times (not the tokens themselves).
- Uploaded attachments and images used in the content above.
- In shared spaces, only blocks you wrote and chapters you created. Other people's content is theirs and is not included.
Limits:
- Download links last 24 hours. After "Expired (download links last 24 hours)", generate a new export.
- Defaults are at most 3 successful exports and 5 attempts per 24 hours; failures count as attempts. When exhausted, the button says "No exports left today". The page shows your account's actual limits.
- Only one export can be generated at a time.
- Source files used in background Smart Import have already been cleaned up after completion and are not included (see Import tasks).
- In the app, the personal-data-export entry under privacy and legal settings opens the website in a browser. Log in there to continue.
Delete your account
You can request account deletion yourself. There is a 15-day cooling-off period in which you can change your mind.
Request deletion
- Back up what you need: members can export their data; to request access to or a copy of personal information under applicable law, contact support@orzsai.com. Data cannot be recovered after deletion completes.
- Click "Account", then "Security", then "Delete account".
- Read the explanation and enter "Current password".
- Check "I understand that when the 15-day cooling-off period ends, my account and the personal data above will be deleted and can't be recovered."
- Click "Request account deletion". Every device is logged out immediately. The login page says "Account deletion requested, and you've been logged out on all devices. To cancel the deletion, log in with your current password before the cooling-off period ends."
In the mobile app, use the small red account-deletion action at the bottom of settings. Enter your current password, enable the acknowledgement switch, and submit the deletion request.
Change your mind within 15 days
- Log in with your original email and password.
- A yellow box says the account is in its deletion cooling-off period, gives the date all personal data will be deleted, and asks whether to cancel deletion and log in.
- Click "Cancel deletion and log in" to restore the account, or "Don't cancel" to keep the request.
After the cooling-off period
- Deleted: your personal space and all its content, uploaded attachments and images, AI chats, AI Tutor lesson records, study plans and review records, and account details.
- Public content you wrote in shared spaces remains, attributed to a deleted user. Your private notes in shared spaces are deleted.
- Before deleting your account, resolve subscriptions and unfinished orders, cancel future automatic charges, and read how remaining benefits and points will be handled. Deletion does not exclude legally required refunds, corrections of unauthorized, duplicate, or erroneous charges, or payment-channel disputes.
- API tokens were already invalidated when you requested deletion.
- Login with the old email then shows only "Incorrect email or password." The email can register again, but it creates an entirely new, empty account.
Agreements and privacy
Here is a short explanation of where data is stored and what AI sees. The full agreements govern the details.
Where to read them:
- Under "Legal" in the footer of Home, Help Center, and similar pages: "Terms of Service", "Privacy Policy", and "Notice for Minors". No login is required.
- In the app, open privacy and legal information in settings.
Key points from the Privacy Policy:
- Age: users under 14 cannot register. Users aged 14 to 18 should use Votion with a guardian's informed consent.
- Data is stored abroad: Votion runs on cloud services (Google Cloud) outside the country, so registration requires separate consent to cross-border transfer of personal information.
- What AI sees: when you use AI features, your input and the notes you ask AI to reference are sent to third-party model providers for processing (see the provider list in the Privacy Policy). Account information such as your email is not sent to model providers.
- No advertising and no sale of data.
- What you can do yourself: view your data; members can export it themselves (see Export your data). Non-members can contact support to exercise their legal right to access or obtain a copy of personal information. You can also delete your account (see Delete your account).
Advanced: CLI and agent accessAdmin only
An API token lets your own AI assistant, scripts, or the votion command-line tool read and write the knowledge base within the permissions you grant. For example, you can import a whole prepared set of lecture notes into a space without giving the tool your password.
API tokens
An API token is a key that opens only certain doors. When you create it, you decide what it can do, which spaces it can access, and when it expires.
-
Choose "Admin" in the avatar menu, then "API Token" on the left.
-
Under "Create token", enter a "Name" that identifies who will use the key and why.
-
Under "Action scopes", check the operations to allow:
scope What it allows readRead spaces, nodes, and blocks; exporting also requires membership createAdd blocks and upload images and attachments importImport a prepared directory in bulk updateMake controlled changes to existing content read_activityRead study activity: AI chats, study logs, quizzes, and mastery (sensitive; unchecked by default) -
In "Space allowlist", select the spaces it may access, or check "All spaces (unrestricted)".
-
Choose a validity period: "30 days", "90 days (default)", "365 days", or "Never expires".
-
Click "Create token". A green box says "Token created — shown in plain text only once; save it now". Click "Copy", store it safely, then click "Saved; close". You cannot view the plain-text token again after closing this box.
- Effective permissions = your account's permissions ∩ the scopes you selected. If you are only a viewer in a space, write scopes do not let you write there. Selecting such a space in the allowlist shows a ⚠️ warning.
- There is no separate delete permission: a token cannot directly delete chapters or blocks. The one exception is re-importing the same project: content removed from the source directory is removed during synchronization. See votion CLI below.
- Each account can have at most 50 unrevoked tokens (expired but unrevoked tokens count too, so revoke unused ones). A space allowlist can contain at most 50 spaces.
- "Existing tokens" shows each token's space scope, expiry, "Last used" time, and status: "Active", "Expired", or "Revoked".
- Click "Revoke" when a token is no longer needed. After confirmation, programs using it immediately lose access.
- Changing or resetting your password, or requesting account deletion, invalidates all your tokens. You must create new ones afterward.
votion CLI
votion CLI is a command-line tool. With an API token, you can view and export the knowledge base from your computer, append content to notes, or import a prepared Markdown directory into a space.
It supports:
- Viewing:
votion spaceslists accessible spaces,votion treeshows a space's outline,votion searchsearches content, andvotion catshows a chapter's blocks. - Exporting:
votion exportexports a chapter and its descendants as Markdown and requires membership. The API, CLI, and website apply the same export benefits. - Writing:
votion addappends blocks to a chapter;votion importimports a Markdown file or an entire directory. - Undoing: writes such as
votion addare recorded as batches.votion batcheslists recent batches, andvotion undoundoes one. Only batches written with the same token can be undone. Content edited since the write is skipped, not overwritten.votion importdoes not record batches; fix the source directory and re-import if needed.
Before using it:
votion importandvotion undoonly preview changes by default. Review the preview, then add--yesto execute.- Re-importing the same project does not create duplicates: unchanged content is skipped, changed content is updated, and content deleted from the source directory is also removed from the space (with a separate warning in the preview).
- Imports use Markdown you have already prepared. They do not use AI or consume Thought Points. New nodes, blocks, and uploaded images still count toward your content and storage usage (see Storage and content limits).
- To have AI recognize PDFs or photos and turn them into notes, use Smart Import on the website or in the app.
- The CLI requires separate installation and configuration on your computer, which this help does not cover.
Security advice
Treat a token like a password: anyone who has it can perform its permitted actions as you.
- Plain text is shown only once. If you lose a token, revoke it and create a new one.
- One token per purpose. Select only the scopes and spaces needed, with the shortest practical lifetime. If one token has a problem, revoke just that one.
- Use a separate token for
read_activity. It can read sensitive data such as AI chats and study records. Create one only when it is needed. - Keep it out of places other people can see. Do not paste tokens into chats, repositories, screenshots, or shared documents.
- Check "Last used" regularly. Revoke a token immediately if you see activity you do not recognize.
- If you suspect a leak, use "Revoke" immediately. If there is no time to check tokens individually, change your password to invalidate them all (see Password changes and signing out devices).
Frequently asked questions
Here are the most common questions, with a direct answer and links to details. If yours is missing, choose "Feedback" in the avatar menu.
Notes
Why did a chapter disappear from the outline?
Check the space switcher at the top left. If a specific subject appears after the slash, only that subject's chapters are shown. A chapter whose subject changed disappears from this view; switch to "All". Also check whether the outline heading has become "Parent node" with a left arrow. That means you double-clicked to focus on a chapter; click it to go back up level by level. See Switch spaces and subjects and Browse and focus.
Why does my space open as a mind map, without the outline?
Your last choice of mind map view for this space was remembered. Click "Switch to content" at the top left to return. See Mind map.
Why can't I drag or edit in the mind map?
Editing requires all three: edit access to the space, edit mode enabled (press i), and an online connection. Otherwise, the top right shows "Read-only" or "Offline browsing". In "Free layout", dragging changes only positions, not hierarchy. To change hierarchy, switch to "Automatic layout" or use "Move to…" under "Actions". See Mind map.
Can I recover something deleted by mistake?
No. Votion has no trash or version history; deleted chapters and blocks cannot be recovered. Before deleting a large chapter, use "Export" to save a PDF or Markdown backup. See Create, rename, move, and delete and Export PDF / Word / Markdown.
Why is there no edit button?
You are a "Viewer" in this space and cannot edit. The public space is also read-only for regular users. Ask a space admin to raise your role, or favorite content into your own personal space and write your understanding there. See Edit mode and Roles and permissions.
Why can't an Editor delete someone else's chapter?
Editors can delete only chapters they created. Attempting another person's chapter shows a deletion-permission error. Ask a space admin or owner to delete it. See Roles and permissions.
Why can't search find content in another space?
Search covers only the current space. Switch to the other space first, then press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows). See Search.
Why does export say there is too much content or another export is running?
Export requires membership. Each export has a content limit. Select fewer chapters and export in parts. Each account can run only one export at a time; wait for the previous download to finish. See Export PDF / Word / Markdown.
Why are images missing or inaccessible in exported Markdown?
Markdown export excludes interactive diagrams and drawings, and removes external images. Site-hosted images remain links to Votion and may not work outside it. For a complete file with images, use PDF or Word. See Export PDF / Word / Markdown.
Why is the website cramped in my phone browser?
Content pages, AI pages, and Account are designed for computer screens. Use the mobile app to read notes, review, and ask AI on your phone; see Mobile app. This help page itself works on phones.
Why won't an image upload?
Check three things: at most 5 MB; PNG, JPG, WebP, or GIF (HEIC, SVG, and BMP are rejected—convert HEIC photos to JPG first); and available storage. In a block editor, choose a file through "Image" in split view or "Insert image". Direct paste and drag-and-drop are unsupported, and uploads do not work offline. See Images and text layout and Storage and content limits.
Why did my text disappear or fail to save?
Failed block saves always show a warning: red "Save failed" at the editor's bottom right (hover for the reason and click "Retry"), or an error toast or "Some changes weren't saved" dialog when saving or exiting edit mode. Your text remains in the editor; retry after the connection returns. If saving remains impossible, such as after deletion or revoked edit access, "Discard changes and exit" in that dialog restores the listed blocks to their last saved content and leaves edit mode. Discarded edits cannot be recovered. To keep the text, choose "Stay in edit mode" and copy it out first. Closing or refreshing directly gives no warning; closing less than 2 seconds after typing may lose the last characters. Also, when two people edit one block, the last save overwrites the earlier one. See Block editor and Saving, undo, and simultaneous editing.
Can I upload my own 3D model under "Interactive"?
No. System admins create these components. You can choose existing ones and adjust their parameters. Request a new model through "Feedback", or use "External embed" for a page that permits embedding. See Interactive demos, including 3D models.
Why does Smart Import say the file is too large, or fail?
The maximum is 10 MB per file. In the app, multiple photos or recordings in one import also have a combined 10 MB limit. Compress or split large PDFs by chapter, or import photos in separate batches. Background PDF import allows at most 50 pages. Failed tasks do not retry automatically. In "Account › Import tasks", "Retry task" reruns only failed batches. See Quota and limits and Import tasks.
Can I import audio on the website?
No. Audio must be recorded live in the mobile app, with at most 3 minutes per part and 10 minutes total. Existing audio files on your phone cannot be selected. See Mobile app: camera, gallery, PDF, and recording.
Study plans
Why do I always get reviews instead of new content?
Due reviews intentionally come first, to reinforce material before you forget. Finish them and return to the plan; "Continue studying" then opens new content. Each review session has at most 50 items; start another for any remaining reviews. See Start studying.
What happens if I click "Next" without rating?
It counts as "Remembered", so the item may not return for several days. When unsure, choose "Fuzzy" so it returns tomorrow. Ratings are recorded when you leave through "Next", "Previous", or a dot, and cannot be changed again that day. See The study page.
What is the difference between "Fuzzy" and "Forgot"?
Both bring the item back tomorrow. "Fuzzy" halves its mastery; "Forgot" resets it to zero. See Three ratings and review intervals.
Can I edit a plan after creating it?
The interface cannot change a plan's name, type, dates, or selected content after creation. Create a new plan with the desired settings and archive the old one. See Create a plan and Archive and delete.
Why is mastery so low?
Plan mastery averages all blocks, including unstudied ones at 0. It often starts at "<1%" and rises as you study. A block's first "Remembered" raises it to 60%, then 84% and 94% with further remembered ratings. See Statistics and Three ratings and review intervals.
Why am I not receiving review reminders?
Only the mobile app sends reminders. Enable review reminders in the study-reminders area of settings, and allow Votion notifications in your phone's system settings. Battery saving and background restrictions can delay or prevent reminders. The app checks roughly hourly; you cannot set a particular time. See Due reminders.
How do I restore an archived plan?
The interface cannot unarchive plans. You can still view their statistics but cannot study them. Create a new plan with the same chapters to start again. See Archive and delete.
AI
Where is "Solve with AI"?
All four conditions must hold: you are an Editor or higher; you entered edit mode with i; you clicked to expand the problem; and it has no solution, showing "Unsolved". For discussion only, none of these editing conditions are needed—use "Discuss with AI" in the problem title bar. See AI solving: save a solution into notes.
Can I send images in AI chat?
You cannot upload images or PDFs directly. Put the image in a problem or block in your notes, then use "Discuss with AI" on the problem, "Discuss this with AI" on the block, or "Discuss with AI" at the page top. AI can then see images in those notes. To turn a whole handout into notes, use Smart Import. See Ask, wait, and view thinking and Discuss note content with AI.
Does AI remember the beginning of a long chat?
You can keep asking; chat length does not prevent sending. In long chats, AI sees only roughly the latest dozen to twenty exchanges, plus the original pinned content in problem, block, or whole-page discussions. Restate earlier conclusions if needed, or use "New chat" for a new topic. See Edit, delete, and reset.
Why does AI use old content after I edit my notes?
Context is fixed when you ask the first question. Later edits do not change what AI sees. Use "Reset" to start with current content, but this clears the discussion's messages. Ideally, finish editing before asking. See Context is pinned at the first question.
Should I choose Flash or Pro?
Flash suits everyday questions; Pro can handle more complex reasoning. After choosing a tier and starting or continuing a task, points are charged according to actual usage. Switching tiers or backend models does not open a separate price-confirmation dialog. You can check completed charges; backend model prices and multipliers are not shown. See AI Thought Points and Flash / Pro.
Why does AI say I need more points even though I am a member?
The new policy no longer uses daily or monthly token quotas that reset. You may have spent your points, a monthly grant may have expired, or part of your balance may be in use by calls already started. Check your balance and actual charges. Imports or lessons paused for insufficient points keep their progress; top up and continue manually. Waiting until the next day does not restore points. See When usage is blocked and Continue a task.
Why can't I see the AI Tutor?
It is still labelled beta. Until access is opened to everyone, only system administrators and accounts on the beta list can use it; afterward, other signed-in accounts can too. Disabled accounts cannot use it. Generating new content requires available Thought Points, not membership; membership or a top-up does not replace the site's access conditions. Starting a lesson, asking questions, and continuing a lesson require the website and an internet connection. Members can download ended lessons for offline replay; points alone do not unlock downloading. If you were just added to the list, refresh to see it. See Who can use it.
Why did the AI Tutor's total scene count decrease?
This is normal. Asking a question discards scenes already written but not yet shown, which are rewritten after you return to the main lesson. See Questions and Q&A boards.
Account and membership
How do I activate membership?
The new policy offers automatically renewing membership at CNY 19.90/month or CNY 168/year, with 1,000 points granted each membership month. You can also buy Thought Points separately for AI without buying membership. Payments have not launched yet. Once available, complete your order and authorize automatic renewal on the purchase page; see Subscribe and top up.
When does membership renew, and what if payment fails?
One charge is attempted when the paid period ends, never in advance and without automatic retries. Success renews the next period and continues grants under the same rules. Confirmed failure returns the account to the free tier at expiry, preserves content and purchased points, and stops future automatic charges for that subscription.
To restore membership, subscribe again and explicitly authorize renewal. The new period starts when the successful new payment takes effect and provides a full month or year, with no charge for the interruption. Buying Thought Points alone does not restore the membership subscription. If the original order is still under reconciliation, wait for its result to avoid duplicate payment. See Subscribe and top up.
How many spaces can a free account create?
Free accounts can own 3 spaces, including the personal space created at registration. Creating a new space still requires the appropriate group permissions. Members can own 20. See Free and member comparison and Create and delete spaces.
Can I change my username?
No. It is fixed at registration and appears in your personal space URL. Email addresses cannot currently be changed either. See Account.
Why haven't I received a verification code?
Check spam. After 60 seconds, click "Resend code" on verification. Codes last 10 minutes; request a new one if expired. Too many requests cause a temporary limit; wait and retry. An account unverified for 7 days is deleted automatically. See Registration and email verification.
What if too many wrong passwords lock me out?
The lock expires automatically; the message gives the wait in minutes. To unlock immediately, use "Forgot password?" and reset successfully. Already logged-in devices are unaffected. See Login and password recovery.
How do I sign out all other devices?
Change your password. Every device, including the current one, must log in again with it. There is no separate sign-out-all-devices button. See Password changes and signing out devices.
Can I cancel account deletion?
Within the 15-day cooling-off period, log in with the original email and password and choose "Cancel deletion and log in" in the yellow box. After 15 days, the data has been deleted and cannot be recovered. See Delete your account.
How does "Export my data" differ from "Export" on a content page?
Both require membership; points alone do not unlock export. "Export my data" in "Account › Security" packages account-wide personal data—notes, study records, AI chats, and more—as a ZIP for backup or transfer. A content page's "Export" includes only selected chapters as PDF, Word, or Markdown for printing and sharing. See Export your data and Export PDF / Word / Markdown.
Can I get a refund for purchased Thought Points?
Ordinary top-ups are non-refundable, including unused points; purchased points never expire. Compensation applies only to incorrect or duplicate point charges, missing grants, or serious failures that leave a verifiable point shortfall. The total restored is 1.5 times the original loss: 100% plus an extra 50%. Effective reversals and reissues already made count toward that total; repeated requests and late fulfillment do not result in duplicate compensation. Points restored earlier but left unusable because they expired do not count as effective restoration; points already used are not reissued. Ordinary errors, waiting, or interrupted membership benefits without points owed do not receive goodwill points and are not arbitrarily converted to points. Both the restored original loss and extra 50% are permanent, even if the original membership grant has expired. Normal monthly grants still expire in their membership month. Legally required refunds, corrections of unauthorized, duplicate, or erroneous payments, and channel disputes follow applicable law and channel rules; granted points cannot be imposed instead of monetary corrections. Membership cancellation stops the next renewal without refunding the current period. Contact support@orzsai.com; see Refunds and service compensation.
Collaboration and offline use
How do I share notes with a classmate?
There is no "Share" button, and you cannot share just one chapter. Share an entire space with a group: create a group in "My groups", send its "Join link", then grant that group access in "Space settings › Permissions" after your classmate joins. See Share a space with a group.
Why can't members edit a space shared with their group?
Their effective role is the lower of their role in the group and the group's role in the space. Both must be at least "Editor" to allow editing. See Roles and permissions.
Why is "Owner group" empty when creating a space?
It lists only groups where you are an admin or owner, excluding your personal group. Create a group in "Account › Groups" first, then return. See Create and delete spaces.
Why doesn't a classmate's join link work?
"This link no longer works" means it expired (30 days by default) or was invalidated by "Reset link". Send a new one. Rejected applicants must wait 24 hours before reapplying to the same group. See Invite through a join link.
Why did my edits disappear when two of us edited one block?
For online edits, the last save wins and overwrites the earlier save without warning. Divide work by chapter when collaborating. See Working together.
Why can't I edit notes or review in web offline mode?
Web offline mode is view-only for downloaded notes. Editing, favorites, and study plans require a connection. The app retains offline editing and local storage of study records, but starting a new study session still requires a connection. Both web and app offline features require membership. Sync pending records online before clearing data to avoid losing them. See What works offline and App offline use and sync.
How do I install the mobile app?
Click "Get the app" in the web header (inside the avatar menu after login). Scan the QR code with your phone to download the installer directly, without login. WeChat may block the installer download; use your phone's camera or browser to scan instead. Only Android is currently available. See Download and update.
Why are space creation, new plans, adding favorites, and the AI Tutor missing in the app?
These are currently web-only. The app cannot create spaces or study plans, can only view existing favorites, and has neither AI solving nor the AI Tutor. Create spaces and plans on the website, then view and study them in the app. See What the app can do.
